In Bengal, BJP is the new X factor

n Sheetalpur village, a little before the Raiganj town, a group of men are sitting by the tea-shop, playing cards. Conversation easily swings to the electoral mood, and Ganesh Das, a farmer, offers his political preference.
"We will vote for BJP this time. It is time to change the government. Ten years is a long time." What does he think about Mamata Banerjee? "She is worse than CPM. She gives money to masjids, but not to mandirs."
In north Bengal highway bazaars, in Malda town, and in Kolkata, an increase in support for the BJP is palpable, driven partially by a narrative that the BJP perfected in north India, of accusing the government of the day of 'appeasement politics'.
Sitting in the party headquarters, BJP state president, Rahul Sinha, is confident of a better performance in a state where it has been traditionally weak. "There is a definite Narendra Modi impact. The hopes invested in TMC have now got dashed, but people are still angry with CPM. So we are seen as the new hope."
But it is through attacking Mamata Banerjee's outreach to Muslims that BJP is hoping to make an impact. When asked if they were hoping for a 'polarisation', Sinha responded, "She is polarizing. She sees Hindu-Muslim in everything." The party strongly objected to the government decision to provide allowances to Imams and Muezzins, which was later struck down by the judiciary.
Sinha alleges, "She also wanted to make a hospital only for Muslims. In schools, she gives cycles to Muslims, not to Hindus. She wears a burqa and does naatak." Alluding to a call by the Shahi Imam of the city's Tipu Sultan Mosque, N R Barkati, who urged Mamata to aggressively take on Modi, "Will a mosque Imam run politics and control the CM? Hindus are angry, and so are some Muslims with this dangerous politics."
But hitting back, Shahi Imam Barkati, a supporter of Trinamool Congress, told HT, "Rahul Sinha will feel bad if Muslims even eat a jalebi. These schemes are essential for Muslim upliftment."
Political observers point out that while BJP will see a rise in its vote-share, this may not translate into seat-wins yet because of the absence of a strong organisational network, ground-level leaders, and a relatively limited social base. But in the first-past-the-post system a swing in votes will affect the overall outcome.
A top CPM leader, on the condition of anonymity, told HT, "Their vote share usually hovered around four to six percent, sometimes going up to eight, but I won't be surprised if it reaches 10 to 12 percent." The left sees a silver lining in this – BJP could well eat into TMC votes, benefiting them.
The Howrah constituency is a case in point. In by-polls held last year, the TMC candidate footballer Prasun Banerjee beat the CPM's Sridip Bhattacharya by 26,000 votes. Bhattacharya told HT, "They won because TMC and BJP had an understanding. BJP put up a candidate, but he did not contest. BJP has at least a lakh votes in this area. TMC will lose those votes this time."
But these calculations are not set–in-stone. A taxi driver right outside the CPM's office in the constituency said he had voted for the party last time, but may vote for BJP this time because of the Modi factor.
In times where no voter's loyalty can be taken for granted, BJP's appeal has made West Bengal a truly multi-cornered contest, difficult to predict.

Narendra Modi – Leading the race to 7 RCR

The 2014 Lok Sabha elections is all about four time chief Minister of Gujarat and BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.

The meteoric rise of the 63-year-old up the political ladder is an incredible story considering his humble beginnings as the son of a small time tea vendor. Despite his image of being a highly polarising figure, Modi is inarguably the tallest and the strongest of all the prime ministerial hopefuls, including Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi.

Having started as an errand runner for the RSS (BJP’s parent organisation), Modi has surely come a long way and his political career is now on the way to reach its pinnacle. Modi’s phenomenal rise in the national political scene, his secretive personal life, his Gujarat model of development, his charismatic personality as well as his controversial past - all makes him a curious case for discussion for his admirers and critics alike.

While the man is praised for his love for the cutting-age technologies, his economic policies and vision, he also faces flak for over Human Development Index numbers in Gujarat and the post-Godhra riots. He is seen as an authoritarian, uncompromising and an aggressive leader but those close to him say that Modi is an extremely charismatic person, warm and effusive. His connection with the people, especially youth is tremendous, for many a role model.

Modi is known for his fiery speeches and excellent oratory skills. He holds a reputation of being a workaholic and has no single case of corruption against him. He often indulges in some theatrics to sell his ideas and send his message across to his supporters effectively. He is believed to have borrowed his half-sleeved knee-length kurta style from yesteryears Bollywood superstar Rajesh Khanna.

The clout of Modi began to grow after he delivered his state to his party for the fourth time in a row in 2012. NaMo wave, which is now progagated as having engulfed the country, started creating ripples when Modi began his Sadbhavana Mission in September 2011 - the first step on his march to Delhi. He wanted to be seen as a inclusive leader.

Drawn to politics in his early teens as a member of the RSS, he has always been a fighter all his life. Partnering with Shankersingh Vaghela in the beginning, Modi worked extremely hard in preparing a strong cadre base of the BJP. As BJP grew stronger in Gujarat, Modi also moved up the political ladder and became the party's General Secretary.

The workaholic and loyal 'sevak' was then handpicked by party veteran LK Advani in 2001 to give a direction to the election campaign in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. Modi struck gold when the turbulent political situation in Gujarat forced his party to send him to the state as chief minister on October 7, 2001, replacing Keshubhai Patel. Though he was brought in to fill the vacuum, the BJP was initially not keen on having him at the forefront due his lack of experience in governance. But he told the party high command that he was either "going to be fully responsible for Gujarat or not at all". Since then, there has been no looking back for this man as he continued to silence his opponents both within the party and outside, besides touching several political milestones in his career.

In the 2012 Gujarat assembly elections, the BJP won 115 out of the 182 seats and Modi became CM for the fourth time. The following year in March, he was appointed as member to the BJP Parliamentary Board - the highest decision-making body of the party. He was also nominated as the chief of party's Central Election Committee.

In the meantime, Modi’s rift with the VHP came to fore when he ordered the demolition of 200 illegal temples in Gandhinagar. He has faced criticism for his autocratic way of functioning, for silencing his competitors and twisting facts to suit political motives. Modi’s rift with his mentor Advani created headlines when the latter resigned after the former was appointed as the chairman of the national campaign committee. But the BJP leadership this time decided to make him its face for the 2014 campaign. The friction riased its head again recently when Advani went public against his re-nomination from Gandhinagar seat. The old war house beat a hasty retreat after the RSS leaned on him.

As the PM candidate of the BJP, Modi’s march to Delhi will depend on BJP’s performance in bigger states like UP, MP, Bihar, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Odisha, Punjab, Karnataka etc. The party is expected to do well in the BJP-ruled states like MP, Goa, Rajasthan and Punjab and is likely to get good number of seats in Delhi, where it recently emerged as the single largest party, and in UP, where the Muzaffarnagar riots seem to have divided the voters on communal lines.

The party has almost no presence in the northeastern states, however the party hopes to spring some surprises in this elections. Lingayat strongman BS Yeddyurappa’s re-entry into the party fold and coming closer of B Sreeramulu’s BSR will surely work in favour of the NDA in Karnataka.

In Bihar, the reputation of CM Nitish Kumar and his party Janata Dal (U) has suffered badly after it parted ways with the BJP, attack on Modi’s rally and the recent RJD rebellion drama. Kumar has virtually been sidelined with former ally BJP going all guns blazing to win majority of the 40 seats in the state. Tthe surprise entry of Ramvilas Paswan’s LJP into the NDA after 12 years and the Dalit leader’s approval of Modi’s PM candidature has further complicated matters for Nitish..

In Odisha, where former ally and ruling party BJD led by CM Naveen Patnaik has an upper hand, the BJP is confident of winning good number of seats. The main opposition party has for the first time entered an alliance with some regional parties in Tamil Nadu to put up a three-way fight with AIADMK and the DMK.

In Andhra Pradesh, where Congress is on the backfoot after the formation of a new state –Telangana – the BJP hopes to spring a surprise in the Seemandhra region where anti-Congress sentiments are at its peak. BJP had supported the cause of Telangana and now aims to extract maximum political advantage from the Telangana region in lieu of its support. But with its former ally TDP joining hands with the Third Front constituent, BJP will have face a multi-cornered contest with Congress, TRS, YSR Congress (Jagan Reddy)and TDP.

Ironically, what was earlier perceived to be a battle between Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi, has now become a contest between the BJP leader and Arvind Kejriwal of AAP.

Kejriwal, whose popularity has taken a beating since the heady days after AAP put up a specular performance in Delhi Assembly polls, is going all out to place him as the real challenger to Modi. Working on the plan, Kejriwal has challenged Modi in Varanasi.

However, Kejriwal is no match to Modi’s pan-India appeal, his growing clout in the international community, his vast experience as a grass root leader and most importantly given the wide view among citizens of the holy town that they have git an opportunity to send the next prime minister of the country to the Parliament.

They hope Modi as PM would bring about real development in the city bursting at its seams without infrastructure.

While winning the Varanasi seat won’t be a problem for Modi since the task to ensure his victory has been given to his trusted lieutenant and a political hawk Amit Shah, what concerns the BJP is the possibility of AAP winning a handful of seats in urban pockets to make the BJP’s 'Mission 272' a tad more difficult task.

The success of Modi’s P2G2 (Pro-people good governance) formula, his emphasis on inclusive growth and holistic development has made him a top favourite of the leaders of the India Inc.

The leaders of India Inc also see a strong leadership in Modi that has a clear roadmap and actionable plans ready for execution. Top business leaders like Ratan Tata and Mukesh Ambani seem to be convinced that for India to come out of its Gross Domestic Paralysis, a visionary and decisive leadership is essential – something which Modi offers.

Amidst displeasure in the BJPover his induction, expelled JD(U) leader Sabir Ali on Saturday asked the BJP leadership to put his membership on hold till the charges against him are cleared.

The Rajya Sabha MP also offered to quit politics forever if it was proved that he has any connection with terrorist Yasin Bhatkal as alleged by senior BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.
"I have written a letter to Dharmendra Pradhan to keep my membership on hold. I have also asked him to form a committee in this regard and enquire into my case on the basis of these allegations. If they find these allegations true even distantly, I will quit politics forever," Ali told reporters here. Ali challenged Naqvi to prove the allegations, saying he has not even seen Bhaktal in his dreams, but came to know only through newspapers.
"I am asking if he has the guts to prove? If not he should quit politics. I am ready to do," he said. Naqvi had yesterday made an angry outburst against induction of Ali whom he called a "friend" of Bhatkal and mocked that Dawood Ibrahim could be the next entrant.
RSS also opposed Ali's entry and lodged a protest with BJP chief Rajnath Singh. "Sabir Ali's induction has caused great resentment. Party leadership has been apprised of d strong views of d cadre n people agnst it," RSS national spokesperson Ram Madhav tweeted today. Naqvi, a Muslim face and Vice President of the party, had termed Ali's entry into BJP as a "mistake" and demanded its reversal.
BJP spokesman Sudhanshu Trivedi had said the induction was done on the recommendation of Bihar unit of the party and "further action" in the matter will be taken after "verifying all facts and antecedents" of Ali. "Terrorist Bhatkal friend joins BJP...soon accepting Dawood...," Naqvi had tweeted, hours after Ali was inducted into the party with much fanfare as it was seen as a boost to the BJP's attempts to attract muslims. "Whatever has happened today, I am pained and have already expressed my anguish in the party.
Somewhere there has been a mistake committed by the party and the party needs to correct that by reversing the decision," Naqvi had said.

Lok Sabha polls: Imran Masood’s bail plea rejected, sent to judicial custody for 14 days

MORADABAD: Arrested in early hours of Saturday, Imran Masood, the Congress candidate from Saharanpur was sent to jail after a Deoband court remanded him to 14 days of judicial custody. An embarrassed Congress could do little but cancel Masood's election campaign rally that the party vice-president Rahul Gandhi was to address in Saharanpur later in the day.

Rahul distanced himself from Imran Masood saying that the words that "he has used against a leader of the opposition do not reflect the ideology of the Congress. Congress does not have such a thought process." Rahul made the statement at a public meeting in Ghaziabad where he was campaigning for his party candidate Raj Babbar. Rahul was to fly down to Saharanpur after this meeting, to campaign for Masood but the event was cancelled following Masood's arrest.

Even as the Congress party maintained silence on Masood's fate, the pressure was mounting on the local Congress leaders to drop Masood from the elections before any decision was taken by the Election Commission of India (ECI) with regards to his candidature in view of the fact that he has violated the Representation of People's Act and the Indian Penal Code.

Masood was arrested before day break on Saturday for his hate speech against Modi. Senior superintendent of Police (SSP) Saharanpur Manoj Kumar himself led a contingent of police, PAC and central para military forces to arrest Masood from his house. He was produced before the Deoband court which remanded him to 14 days of judicial custody. SSP Saharanpur said the arrest was made in connection with a case lodged at the instance of the election commission.

Masood has been booked under section 295 (A) (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings), 504 (Intentional insult to provoke breach of peace), 506 (criminal intimidation) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) coupled with section 125 of of Representation of People Act which deals with promoting enmity between classes in connection with election. The fact that police had also slapped section 310 of the Prevention of Atrocities against SC/ST Act virtually sealed Imran's fate and ensured his arrest.

Masood, who on Friday expressed regret for his remark on Modi, tried to play a political martyr on Saturday claiming that his arrest was a result of a conspiracy hatched by the BJP. "I have not done anything wrong. I will not apologize either to Narendra Modi or BJP," said the Congress leader, while being taken away from the court. During the court hearing, police had a tough time chasing away Masood's supporters who had gathered outside the courtroom in large numbers.

Interestingl, even after Congress legislature party leader Pradeep Mathur confirmed that Rahul Gandhi has cancelled his rally at Saharanpur till further notice, the party tried to come clean on the issue claiming that the video footage in which Imran Masood is shown saying that he will chop BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi to pieces was shot before he joined the Congress. Uttar Pradesh Congress committee (UPCC) president Nirmal Khatri said: "Firstly the so called hate speech of Imran Masood ji was delivered in December 2013 when he was with the SP. He has joined the Congress barely a fortnight ago." Khatri also claimed that according to Masood himself, the language he had used was a part of the local dialect and was not at all supposed to be taken literally.

The hate speech video shows Masood saying: "If Modi tries to make Uttar Pradesh into Gujarat, then we will chop him into tiny pieces ... I am not scared of getting killed or attacking someone. I will fight against Modi. He thinks UP is Gujarat. Only 4% Muslims are there in Gujarat while there are 42% Muslims in UP."

Two Asom Gana Parishad leaders join BJP, Gorkha Janmukti Morcha pledges support in West Bengal

Ahmedabad AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal committed a gaffe at his rally in Ahmedabad when he paid homage to four RTI activists, of whom three happen to be alive.

Mr Kejriwal started his speech on March 8 by reading an obituary note in which he named Amit Jethwa, Bhagu Dewani, Jaysukh Bhambhaniya and Manisha Goswami as martyrs for the cause of society.

"First of all I want to pay homage to those who have sacrificed their lives in the last 10 years while fighting against corruption in Gujarat," Mr Kejriwal said, adding that he paid homage to all of them "from the bottom of my heart".

After his four-day tour of the state to "inspect" the development as claimed by BJP's prime ministerial nominee Narendra Modi, Mr Kejriwal held a road show and later addressed a rally.

Of the four RTI activists he named, only Mr Jethwa is dead.

He was killed on July 20, 2010 in front of the Gujarat High Court, allegedly by mining mafia.

But the other three are very much alive.

Mr Dewani (64), a lawyer from Porbandar district, told PTI: "I was attacked three years back, but right now my health is quite good...and my fight against corruption is on."

I am likely to join AAP very soon. Mr Kejriwal can provide good leadership to the RTI activists like us, Mr Dewani added.

On July 25, 2011 Mr Dewani was pulled out of his car in Porbandar by five to six persons and was stabbed in his stomach, but he survived. He alleged that minister Babu Bokhiria was behind the attack.

He has also filed a petition in the High Court accusing Mr Bokhiria of running illegal mines in the Porbandar district.

Jaysukh Bhambhania (42) said, "I am fortunate to be alive after an attack on August 24, 2011. I was attacked with swords and pipes followed by a failed acid attack, after I had filed an RTI application regarding construction of a restaurant and bogus license issued by RTO to bike-vendors."

Mr Bhambhania also blamed some local politicians and government officers for the attack.

Manisha Goswami was attacked on September 21, 2011 following her RTI application seeking details of environment clearances obtained by a private firm. "She now lives in Vapi," one of the rights activists told PTI.

When asked for a comment, AAP's Gujarat convener Sukhdev Patel said, "When he mentioned the names, I was not there, but I will certainly check this out."

Nandan Nilekani Version 3.0: now, a politician

BangaloreAn IT billionaire, a top bureaucrat, a candidate from prestigious Bangalore South. That is one man, not three. Nandan Nilekani rose to fame as the co-founder of Infosys, a company that made him a billionaire. He quit that lucrative job to take up the challenging and sometimes controversial job of heading the country's Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). And now - in stage three of his public life - he has taken the plunge into politics and has formally joined the Congress to contest the polls from Bangalore South.

While he is no stranger to public life, Mr Nilekani's experience at the Congress office in Bangalore today, when he officially joined the party, was something new. Traditional drums, shouting of slogans, garlanding, Mysore turbans - and the general chaos and crowds that tend to accompany political events in the world's largest democracy.

About this change in work environment, he told NDTV, "I am ready to adapt like I have always adapted. But I am very excited. And I am very confident that I am going to win."

"I think politics needs a change, needs new people, people with a clean image, people with experience in problem solving, people who are local. I satisfy all that," he added.

There had been reports of unhappiness in the local Congress unit at an outsider being given a ticket at such lighting speed. But on this occasion, it was the supporters, not the detractors who turned out. (Congress's first list for Lok Sabha polls)

"100% Congress will win. Nandan Nilekani will become Prime Minister also future, now MP," said one of the party workers, standing with banners and posters outside the office. Another added, "Nandan Nilekani is heart of Bangalore, Nandan Nilekani is future of Bangalore. He is future of India also."

Bangalore South has been represented by its sitting MP, Ananth Kumar of the BJP, since 1996. He has won five times in a row, and the BJP wants to hold on to that urban seat by tackling the Nilekani challenge. (Sonia, Rahul, Nandan in Congress's first list)

The BJP has officially complained about posters seen across South Bangalore in that rather confusing time when it was known that Mr Nilekani would join the Congress and be given the Bangalore South ticket - but when it still was not official.

BJP spokesperson in the state, Malavika Avinash, said, "For the last 15 days, Bangalore has been seeing advertisements where Sri Nandan Nilekani proclaims himself to be the giver of about 60 crore Aadhar cards to Indians. He was one of the officers who implemented a union government scheme. It was not his private enterprise that he goes around advertising it like this."

Mr Nilekani may describe himself as an ordinary party worker - but ordinary workers are not welcomed to the party the way he was today. Nor are they given tickets to contest prestigious parliamentary constituencies before they have even formally joined the party. But Mr Nilekani is formally part of the Congress now, and as he takes on veteran Ananth Kumar in Bangalore South, he will know that he has jumped into politics at the deep end.

Nokia X launched in India for Rs 8,599: Nokia’s first Android phone available from today

Nokia has launched its first Android device for India at an event in Mumbai. The Nokia X will be available from today for Rs 8,599. That price is slightly higher than the Rs 8,500 tag it was expected to sport, and could be the major factor in the final equation, Nokia is positioning the X series below its Lumia line, but above the Asha range, so it is expected to bridge the gap between the two price points. It must be noted that the price announced is the MOP (Market Operative Price) of the phone, so the box price (or MRP) is higher.

While the Nokia X has been launched, the company didn’t launch the X+ or the XL in India. Both are expected to launch in the next couple of months. The Nokia X run Android, but the login and app data is tied to Microsoft’s cloud services, and not Google as in any other Android phone. The phones run a version of Android Open Source Project, with access to sideloading of apps, third-party app stores and Nokia’s own store. You will find Microsoft essentials instead of Google services. Users will get one month of free Skype calls to mobiles and landlines when they purchase the Nokia X.

The Nokia X features a 4-inch display with a 800×480 pixel resolution. It sports a low-powered Snapdragon S4 SoC with dual-core processor, which given the other specs should be enough for most use cases. The dual-core processor is clocked at 1GHz. There’s 512MB of RAM on the Nokia X, and it has 4GB internal storage and the ability to take in microSD cards up to 32GB in capacity.

The Finnish company has decided to go with a 3-megapixel primary shooter, and there’s no front-facing camera. That’s a bit of a disappointment for the selfie-obssessed and Skype users, though you can still use Skype on the phone. The Nokia X gets a 1500 mAh battery, rated for around 13 hours of talk time on 2G and 17 days standby time. In terms of connectivity, the X and X+ have dual SIM slots, 3G cellular data, Wi-Fi b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0.

Kejri keeps firing, calls Modi claims mere numbers

After the urban electorate of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal appears to be targeting specific pockets of the rural electorate which have been at odds with the ruling government in every state.
After the farmers of Mandal-Becharaji and fisherfolk of Bhadreshwar in Gujarat who had taken on Narendra Modi, on Sunday, Kejriwal spoke to the farmers of Mathura who had revolted against the erstwhile Mayawati government over land acquisition. But even there, it was clear his fire was more against Modi than the UPA government.
‘Development needs to be in full view of masses and cannot be hidden in statistics. We took a four day trip to Gujarat and came across reality,” Kejriwal said.
“There were black flags hurled at us and when we asked why, they said why we were opposing Modi. Later, they admitted they had received compensation for land acquired but could not get jobs promised and once convinced, they got ready to support us,” Kejriwal said.
But Kejriwal’s trashing of the Gujarat government fell rather flat after a video featuring AAP leader Yogendra Yadav praising Gujarat’s progress went viral on YouTube on Sunday. The video, a clip from CNBC TV18 channel’s programme, recorded prior to Yadav joining AAP, showed the psephologist-turned-Gurgaon candidate quoting a Congress sarpanch from Gujarat praising the availability of electricity, water and roads. “If you try and gather the truth at ground level, for ordinary people, the experience has improved somewhat,” Yadav says.  “Check the entire interview before coming to conclusions. Selected clips can create false impression,” Yadav told HT.

China media: Missing Malaysian plane

The fate of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, which vanished from radar almost three days ago en route to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur, is dominating headlines.
A commentary in the Beijing Times notes that Premier Li Keqiang said he was "very worried" over the missing plane and added that his government will continue to be a "strong shield" for people who are overseas.
"When the citizens are out of the country, their dignity is closely linked to the dignity of the country. When the country is strong and prosperous, especially if it respects the citizens and protects them, citizens will feel confident and proud when they are abroad," it says.
Criticising Malaysia for not responding swiftly during the initial stages of the problem, the Global Times Chinese edition says the incident shows there were "obvious loopholes in security checks" in Malaysia.
The daily calls for better security for Chinese holidaymakers.
"The Chinese society is no longer in the era of poverty, life is no longer cheap. We demand safety of food, air, water as well as transportation. So we pay great attention to the safety situation in holiday destinations in other countries which are popular among the Chinese," it says.
On a gentler tone, a commentary in the People's Daily overseas edition, reprinted in the Southern Metropolis Daily, notes that there were different nationalities on board the plane and "humanity shares the same fate".
"On the internet, on Weibo or Wechat, millions of Chinese are praying for the plane. In every corner of the world, people of all races are all praying for the passengers onboard MH370," it says.
Meanwhile, papers are also raising questions about security at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia after it was discovered that two passengers boarded the plane with stolen passports.
"The fact that some of the passengers on board were travelling with false passports should serve as a reminder to the whole world that security can never be too tight, at airports in particular," says China Daily.
Echoing similar views, China Business News says that the fake passport holders should have been stopped at the immigration counter.
It adds that it is easier for passengers with stolen passports to pass through custom checks in South-east Asian airports.
Death penalty debate Moving on to other news, China's National People's Congress (NPC) is planning to revise the country's criminal law to reduce the number of death sentences given by courts, according to local media reports.
Zang Tiewei, member of the NPC's committee on legislative affairs, said the legislature is studying a proposal, submitted at the ongoing parliament sessions, to restrict the death penalty to extremely serious crimes.
The Southern Metropolis Daily adds that the proposal, submitted by 36 members of the NPC, includes a suggestion to abolish the death penalty for financial crimes.
Zhu Zhengfu, a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, tells the papers that the fear of capital punishment has not been able to reduce the number of illegal fundraising activities.
"Death sentence alone is not enough to deter such crimes, most importantly there is a need for reform outside the sphere of punishment," he is quoted as saying.
Agreeing with the thought, experts interviewed by the Global Times say that such crimes pose "less social harm than violent crimes" but urge the authorities to improve market regulation.
However, Beijing News notes that there are differing views on the abolition as such fraudulent crimes "usually involved many people and might affect social stability".
And finally, Shen Peiping, vice-governor of south-western China's Yunnan province, is under investigation for "suspected serious violation of discipline and laws", local media reports say.

China-bound Malaysian flight 'missing', five Indians reported on board - See more at:

A Malaysia Airlines flight carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew went missing over the South China Sea on Saturday, presumed crashed, as ships from countries closest to its flight path scoured a large search area for any wreckage. - See more at: http://www.hindustantimes.com/world-news/malaysian-plane-crashed-off-vietnam-coast-state-media/article1-1192421.aspx#sthash.MSUxzlC9.dpuf  We are doing everything we can to ensure every possible angle has been addressed," Transport Minister Hishamuddin Hussein told reporters near the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

"We are looking for accurate information from the Malaysian military. They are waiting for information from the Vietnamese side," he said.

Vietnam's state-run Tuoi Tre news also quoted Admiral Ngo Van Phat as qualifying his earlier remarks about a crash site having been identified, saying he had been referring to a presumed crash site beneath the plane's flight path using information supplied by Malaysia.

A crash, if confirmed, would mark the US-built Boeing 777-200ER airliner's deadliest incident since entering service 19 years ago.

The plane disappeared without giving a distress signal - a chilling echo of an Air France flight that crashed into the South Atlantic on June 1, 2009, killing all 228 people on board. It vanished for hours without issuing a distress call.

Vanished after reaching 35,000 feet
Flight MH370, operating a Boeing 777-200ER aircraft, last had contact with air traffic controllers 120 nautical miles off the east coast of the Malaysian town of Kota Bharu, Malaysia Airlines chief executive Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said in a statement read to an earlier news conference in Kuala Lumpur.

Flight tracking website flightaware.com showed the plane flew northeast over Malaysia after takeoff and climbed to an altitude of 35,000 feet. The flight vanished from the website's tracking records a minute later while it was still climbing.

Malaysia and Vietnam were conducting a joint search and rescue, he said but gave no details. China and the Philippines have sent ships to the South China Sea to help in any search and rescue.

"We are extremely worried," Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told reporters in Beijing before the initial Vietnamese report that the plane had crashed. "The news is very disturbing. We hope everyone on the plane is safe."

The flight left Kuala Lumpur at 12.21 a.m. (1621 GMT Friday) but no trace had been found of the plane more than eight hours after it was due to land in the Chinese capital at 6.30 a.m. (2230 GMT Friday) the same day.

"We deeply regret that we have lost all contacts with flight MH370," Jauhari said.

Malaysia Airlines said people from 14 nationalities were among the 227 passengers, including at least 152 Chinese, 38 Malaysians, 12 Indonesians, six Australians and three Americans. It also said a Chinese infant and an American infant were aboard.

If it is confirmed that the plane has crashed, the loss would mark the second fatal accident involving a Boeing 777 in less than a year and by far the worst since the jet entered service in 1995.

An Asiana Airlines Boeing 777-200ER crash-landed in San Francisco in July 2013, killing three passengers and injuring more than 180.
Boeing said it was aware of reports that the Malaysia Airlines plane was missing and was monitoring the situation but had no further comment. The flight was operating as a China Southern Airlines codeshare.

An official at the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) said the plane had failed to check in as scheduled at 1721 GMT while it was flying over the sea between Malaysia and Ho Chi Minh city.

We are doing everything we can to ensure every possible angle has been addressed," Transport Minister Hishamuddin Hussein told reporters near the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Daimler India to set up bus manufacturing facility near Chennai

Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV) will invest Rs 450 crore to set up a dedicated bus manufacturing facility. The facility which will span across 27.91 acre inside its existing truck manufacturing facility at Oragadam near Chennai will employ 300 people. It will commence production in the second quarter of 2015 and will manufacture 1,500 buses annually under both Mercedes-Benz and BharatBenz brands.
The DICV plant at Oragadam will be the only Daimler plant worldwide to manufacture three brands -- Daimler trucks, Mercedes-Benz buses and BharatBenz buses and engines under one roof.
"After launching the truck business in India, we are now pressing ahead on the Indian bus market," announced Wolfgang Bernhardt, Member of the Daimler AG Board responsible for Daimler Trucks & Buses.
"We will be using existing suppliers and sales network." He laid the foundation stone for the bus plant.
The company has tied with Wrightbus, a global player in the bus body building for its front-engined buses. "Our two-fold strategy BharatBenz and Mercedes-Benz buses allows us to cater to the different needs of Indian customers in a perfect way. In terms of safety, fuel efficiency, quality and comfort, both the brands will set a new standard," Hartmut Schick, head of Daimler Buses said.
Mark Llistosella, MD and CEO at Daimler India Commercial Vehicles said BharatBenz has become the fourth-largest truck manufacturer in the country on the strength of its high performance backed by best-in-class service. "I am confident the bus project will deliver the same level of promise and experience to the customer," he added.

NATO Airstrike Kills 5 Afghan Soldiers

A NATO airstrike killed five Afghan soldiers and wounded at least eight others early Thursday in the eastern province of Logar.

A spokeswoman for the U.S.-led international forces in Afghanistan said the troops were accidentally killed during a military operation.

She said an investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the incident, and sent condolences to the families of those killed.

It was not immediately clear what weapons were used to carry out the airstrike or what target was hit.

Provincial officials in Logar say they will meet later Thursday to determine their official response.

The strike comes amid a low point in ties between the United States and Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who has criticized airstrikes that kill Afghans.

President Karzai, who is on an official visit to Sri Lanka, has not commented on the strike.

U.S. officials say if Mr. Karzai does not agree soon to a long-delayed deal on a lasting American military presence, all U.S. troops will be pulled from the country in December.

Kashmiris accused of sedition for cheering Pak win, CM fumes

Meerut Police have registered a case of sedition against the 67 Kashmiri students of Meerut's Swami Vivekanand Subharti University (SVSU) who allegedly celebrated the victory of Pakistan over India in a cricket match on Saturday.

The case of sedition was registered under section 124 (a) of the Indian Penal Code against unknown students of SVSU on Wednesday. We have registered the case against unknown students and the culprits would be brought into record after investigation," said senior superintendent of police Onkar Singh.

A delegation of Bharatiya Janata Party leaders met the university's vice chancellor Dr Manzoor Ahmad and management officials demanding stern action against the students who praised Pakistan terming their act "anti-national".
A group of students associated with youth wing of the safforn party also burnt the effigy of the vice chancellor while students in CCS University took out Ahmad's symbolic funeral procession inside the premises blaming him for being lenient to the students.

The trouble began on Saturday when a group of local and Kashmiri students were watching the India-Pakistan match in SVSU's Madan Lal Dhingra Hostel.
A group of Kashmiri students allegedly celebrated Pakistan's victory over India and a few of them shouted slogan "Pakistan Zindabad" on the way back to their rooms. Their act triggered tension in the university.
The university management initiated a three-tier inquiry and questioned other Kashmiri students who refused to divulge the identity of those who were involved in the incident. As a result, the management suspended all 67 Kashmiri students residing in the hostel.

The suspended students were asked to vacate the hostel and go back to their homes in Jammu and Kashmir. They were dropped at Ghaziabad and Delhi railway station under police security.

Experts believe that those who are supporting the errant students by concealing their names can also be charged with conspiracy under section 120 (b).
The registration of case under 124(a) would block the possibility of revoking the suspension of students who have been pursuing courses in technology, law and business administration in the university.
Chief minister Omar Abdullah reacted on Twitter saying that the charge was an "unacceptably harsh punishment" and said that the would talk to Uttar Pradesh's chief minister 'ASAP'.
I believe what the students did was wrong & misguided but they certainly didn't deserve to have charges of sedition slapped against them 4/n

Aam Aadmi Party in a spot over clash with BJP workers in Delhi, Ashutosh faces arrest

Aam Aadmi Party leader and former journalist Ashutosh is likely to arrested in connection with a case registered against him in connection with the violence outside the Bharatiya Janata Party office in Delhi on Wednesday, according to police sources.

The Delhi Police on Thursday registered a case of rioting and destruction of public property against Ashutosh, party leader Shazia Ilmi and arrested 14 AAP members for the clashes. Later, it told the Delhi Election Commission that the party had not taken permission to outside the BJP HQs.

According to police sources, an FIR was lodged at Parliament Street Police Station on Wednesday night against the AAP protesters including leaders Ashutosh and Ilmi.
Charges of rioting, obstructing a public servant from performing his duty and damaging public property have been slapped against them, the sources said.
Police had initially detained 33 people out of which 14 were arrested late on Wednesday night while others were allowed to go.
"All those identifiable and present at the protest site have been named in the FIR," said a senior Delhi police official.

Those arrested will be produced before a local court in Delhi in the afternoon.
Twenty eight people, including 13 AAP activists and 10 BJP supporters, were injured in the clashes, police said.
Police have termed the AAP protest as completely illegal as no prior permission was sought in this connection by the party.
Police have also got the entire sequence of events videographed and senior officials said that more arrests are possible after identification in the video footage.
Clashes broke out between workers of the AAP and the BJP in half-a-dozen towns across the country hours after AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal was briefly detained by police in a north Gujarat town. The former Delhi chief minister was released after 30 minutes.
Kejriwal began a four-day tour of Gujarat to check chief minister and BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi's claims that the state was a model of development.

He was detained for alleged violation of the model code of conduct by travelling in a long motorcade.

Protests by AAP workers outside the Delhi BJP office against Kejriwal's detention in Gujarat snowballed into a clash when BJP activists allegedly threw stones at them and the protestors retaliated. While both sides hurled chairs and sticks at each other, police intervened, using water cannons to disperse the crowd.
Angry AAP workers vandalised the BJP hoardings in the area. AAP leaders Ilmi, Ashutosh and Rajmohan Gandhi were present at the protest site. Ilmi told media persons it was a peaceful protest by them but the BJP workers indulged in violence.
In Gujarat's Kutch, former Delhi chief minister Kejriwal's car was attacked by a few unidentified people. The windscreen of his four-wheeler was damaged in the incident.
Armed with brooms, AAP workers also clashed with lathi-wielding activists of BJP in Uttar Pradesh's Lucknow. AAP activists allegedly attacked the BJP office with bricks, drawing retaliation as the saffron party workers, carrying canes, took to the streets.
Video: AAP, BJP scuffle over Kejriwal's detention
Several people were mercilessly beaten up by canes after being knocked down on the road as rival groups chased each other away.
Reports of similar clashes also came in from other UP towns such as Jhansi, Kanpur and Allahabad.
Reacting over the New Delhi clashes, BJP leaders said the AAP was responsible for the fracas.
"Do they believe in Maoism?" asked BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad while another spokesman Nirmala Sitharaman said: "No one should indulge in this kind of destructive politics. What's happening is completely unwarranted, highly condemnable."
While the police were able to round up a few protesters, the violent episode led to traffic snarls outside the BJP office, which is located in the heart of the national capital. The area is a high security zone and both the BJP and AAP supporters claimed the cops did not take immediate action against the aggressors.
A Twitter storm also broke out after AAP leader and former journalist Ashutosh was pictured climbing the gate of the BJP office in New Delhi.
While the AAP leader claimed he was requesting his supporters to stay calm, BJP leaders charged him with inciting violence.
"Why was Ashutosh leading the violent protests? We demand action against him," BJP spokesperson Nalin Kohli said.

Kejriwal had on Wednesday accused the BJP of instigating violence in front of its headquarters in Delhi even as he apologised for some AAP activists "retaliating" while protesting his detention.
He claimed that AAP workers were first attacked by BJP supporters. Some of the agitated AAP workers had responded by pelting "two or three stones".
"I am sorry for the mistakes committed by the AAP workers. They should not have resorted to violence on my detention," he said.
He also blamed BJP workers for attacking his entourage while travelling in Gujarat and said the glass panes of his car were broken.

LK Advani joins Rahul Gandhi in criticizing BJP for being 'one-man show'

NEW DELHI: BJP's preeminent party elder, LK Advani, has critiqued the Narendra Modi-led and dominated campaign effort by telling the party's senior leaders that it is becoming "a one-man party". Advani has also told BJP leaders that he agrees with Rahul Gandhi's critique of BJP being dominated by one leader.

BJP's senior-most leaders who spoke to ET for this story, on condition they not be identified, said Advani has been making similar observations over the last few weeks, as Modi's campaign has gathered tempo. But the sharpest critique, one BJP leader said, came at the February 27 meeting of BJP's central election committee.

Modi, Advani and Rajnath Singh were among those who attended the meeting. Another leader, who also attended the meeting, said Advani made his observations as leaders were looking at pros and cons of prospective candidates to finalise the party's first list. Modi was seated next to Advani. Advani, this leader added, said he agrees with Rahul Gandhi's critique, which was made in Haryana on February 24, that BJP has been reduced to a one man show. When another leader proposed that BJP should counter this, Advani is learnt to have said, "There's nothing wrong with what he ( Rahul Gandhi) has said." Another meeting attendee said when Advani made these remarks, "there was uncomfortable silence".

"Modi kept quiet", this leader said, while others "didn't take the point forward". Rajnath Singh, who this leader said was seated on the other side of Advani, "broke the silence and started talking about candidate selection". Advani could not be contacted.

The party elder's scriticism of BJP's campaign style has been expressed at other party forums as well, a senior BJP leader closely involved with election strategy said. Another BJP leader, who's been a close associate of Modi, said: "Advaniji's criticism is not surprising...he had wanted to be the party's PM candidate."

Advani is learnt to have told the party leadership that "campaigning is a joint effort by the party where all senior leaders should take part...This time it is Modi and only Modi who is visible. What about others like Sushma Swaraj who are capable of holding the crowds' attention?" But a BJP strategist told ET Advani's critique is "misplaced". "Every state unit is sending requests for Modi rallies," this leader said. "He's the biggest draw...right now, only Modi and Rajnath Singh are on the move."

Advani and Modi has had a strained relationship for months now, with the party elder famously quitting the party upon Modi's elevation as campaign committee chief in BJP's Goa conclave in June 2013.

Subsequently, when BJP named Modi as its PM candidate, Advani had stayed away from the party's parliamentary board meeting.

UPA damaging institution of Lokpal: BJP

Citing the refusal of an eminent jurist and a former Supreme Court judge to serve on the Search Committee for Lokpal, the BJP on Wednesday accused UPA government of damaging the institution of Lokpal even before its creation.
Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley also referred to the refusal of several former SC judges to head a Commission of Inquiry formed by the Centre to probe ‘snoopgate’ allegedly involving Narendra Modi to argue that the “moral isolation” of the “arrogant and vindictive” government is complete.
“When eminent and independent persons of repute are refusing to associate with the search and selection exercise while suspecting the motives of the government its moral isolation is complete,” he wrote on his blog.
Fali S Nariman and Justice (retd) K.T. Thomas, both of whom refused to be on the Search Committee, had questioned the entire process with Mr. Nariman arguing that it could overlook the most competent, independent and courageous persons.
“It is now clear that the institution of Lokpal is being damaged even prior to its creation,” Mr. Jaitley said. He said government has consistently tried to tweak the process to suit its interests while ignoring people of eminence.
He said the object of the constitution of the Commission of Inquiry for ‘snoopgate’ was political and the Centre wanted to embarrass the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate.
“What happened to that Commission? One after the other retired judges of the Supreme Court were approached to head the Commission. They declined to lend themselves for this politically motivated exercise,” he said.
Besides being a complete abuse of power, Mr. Jaitley said, the Commission smacked of vindictiveness and arrogance.
“Arrogance has been the hallmark of the UPA government in the past ten years. Arrogance is a certain guarantee for political downfall. Arrogance isolates them from various sections of society which find their attitude unacceptable,” he said.

Over 2.3 crore new electors in this age group of 18 to 19 years, constituting 2.88 per cent of total electors have been added. The last election had seen an increase of 0.75 per cent in this age group. The number of electors enrolled as "Others" gender that comprising transgenders is 28,314. There are also 11,844 overseas electors in the current electoral rolls and another 13,28,621 service electors. The Chief Election Commissioner appealed to the political parties and candidates to uphold the peerless democratic traditions of the nation by maintaining high standards of political discourse and fairplay in their election campaign. Reassuring the nation of its commitment to hold free, fair and credible elections, Sampath exhorted the 1.1 crore election officials to rededicate themselves to the tasks associated with the conduct of elections as a sacred duty. He also called upon all voters to reinforce the democratic ethos of the nation by turning up at polling stations and exercising their right to vote in an informed and ethical manner. Bye-elections to 23 vacancies in Bihar (2), Gujarat (7), Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Mizoram (one each), Uttar Pradesh (4) and West Bengal (6) will be held simultaneously on the dates of Lok Sabha elections in these states. The Commission also allowed a last chance to all such eligible voters whose names have been deleted from the electoral rolls for some reason to be registered again. "The EC has directed that a special camp be organised at all 9.30 lakh polling stations on March 9 for this purpose," Sampath said. The electoral rolls are ready after being updated with January one this year as the cut-off date and will be put up at polling booths for a final check by voters. The EC will use EVMs for the Lok Sabha elections and a total of over 17 lakh EVMs will be deployed during the polls. For the first time in parliamentary polls, a system of paper trail for electronic voting will be introduced in some constituencies on a trial basis and the Commission is in the process of procuring 20,000 EVMs which will be deployed for this purpose. The EC is also introducing a system of optional e-filing of affidavits by candidates to ensure that no omission is made out. A candidate will have to file a hard copy of the affidavit along with the nomination paper. In case a column is left blank, the Returning Officer will send a notice to the candidate for filing a fresh one, failing which the nomination is liable to be rejected following a Supreme Court directive in this regard. The Commission has also issued guidelines to political parties asking them to explain the rationale of financing the promises they make in their election manifestos. The guidelines that followed Supreme Court directions in this regard have now been made part of the Model Code. From the coming elections, candidates in a parliamentary constituency in bigger states can spend up to Rs 70 lakh on their campaign, up from Rs 40 lakh in 2011. In the 2009 elections, it was Rs 25 lakh. Another first in the Lok Sabha elections will be the introduction of "None of the Above" (NOTA) option in voting, which came into vogue in the assembly elections a few months ago. A total of 1.1 crore poll personnel, half of them being security forces, will be deployed for the smooth conduct of polls and to ensure that they are free and fair. A database of the civilian staff to be deployed for conducting polls has been prepared and at least 5.5 million civilian staff would be deployed. The list of central government employees to be deployed for poll duty as micro-observers in sensitive polling stations has also been prepared. Nitish questions Paswan's new love for Narendra Modi

Attacking LJP chief Ramvilas Paswan for praising Modi, Chief Minister today asked if he was not the same leader who had introduced himself to then President as one who left over the 2002 Godhra riots.

"Paswan needs to tell people the truth about his quitting NDA government, whether it was on the question of change of his ministerial portfolio or the riots?" Kumar told reporters here.

"A person who missed no chance to criticise after walking out of NDA is today lavishly praising him," he said.

Paswan, who shared the dais with Narendra Modi at a rally at Muzaffarpur yesterday, had described him as 'vikas purush' (development man) and 'future Prime Minister of the country' and criticised Kumar.

Referring to , Kumar said there was no caste massacre in the last eight years in and the crime rate had declined in comparison to earlier times.

Oscar Pistorius's defence grills key state witness on day 2 of murder trial

PRETORIA: Lawyers for Paralympian Oscar Pistorius for a second day on Tuesday grilled a key witness at his murder trial who claims to have heard screams, then shots, as his girlfriend was killed.
The second day of Pistorius's trial for the Valentine's Day killing of Reeva Steenkamp began with lawyer Barry Roux redoubling efforts to pick apart the prosecution's premier witness.

Neighbour Michelle Burger testified Monday that she heard "bloodcurdling" screams at the home less than 200 metres (yards) away from her own, before shots rang out in the early hours of February 14, 2013.

The sequence of events, if accurate, would undermine the Paralympic gold medallist's claim that he shot Steenkamp after mistaking her for an intruder.

Pistorius, 27, a double amputee known as the " Blade Runner" for his carbon-fibre running blades, pleaded not guilty to murder and three unrelated gun charges on the opening day of the trial.

In a statement read out by his lawyer Kenny Oldwage, the sprinter described Steenkamp's death as a "tragic accident".

While admitting killing the 29-year-old model and law graduate, he denied murderous intent.

"This allegation is denied in the strongest terms," he said. "We were in a loving relationship."

If found guilty of premeditated murder, Pistorius faces 25 years in South Africa's notoriously brutal jails and an abrupt end to his glittering sporting career.

Arriving at court on Tuesday, a tired looking Pistorius -- carrying an umbrella and a briefcase -- immediately greeted his lawyer then shook the hand of a police officer. When seated he began to pray.

'Bang... bang, bang, bang'
Monday's proceedings were dominated by the duel between Roux and Burger -- who is a construction economics lecturer at the University of Pretoria.

Burger, the first prosecution witness, said she and her husband were awoken at around 3:00 am by "bloodcurdling screams" coming from the Pistorius home in an upmarket gated community of Pretoria.

"She screamed terribly and she yelled for help," Burger recalled. "It was something you can't explain to someone else, how anxious those screams were."

"Just after her screams, I heard shots, four shots," she said, describing one clear shot then three clustered together.

"Bang... bang, bang, bang."

"I heard petrified screaming before the gunshots, and just after the gunshots," she said when pressed by Pistorius's lawyer.

Roux grilled her over the number of shots she heard -- and whether they were gunshots at all -- suggesting that Burger's account contradicted that of her husband, who has yet to testify.

Roux also suggested she may have mistaken for shots the sound of Pistorius breaking the toilet door with a cricket bat after realising that Steenkamp was inside.

Roux also questioned Burger's claim that she heard the shouts of both a man and a woman.

"You know... if Mr Pistorius is very anxious, if he screams it sounds like a woman's voice," Roux said.

Criminal law advocate Dave Smith, who is not linked to the case, told AFP that Burger "looks solid as a rock" in the witness stand.

"It's important to prove her wrong but I don't think he will," he said. "I'm happy I'm not him."

"She is firm that she heard screams, then gunshots and that they weren't the sound of a cricket bat. That says it all."

Botched evidence
As well as relentlessly picking holes in the testimony of state witnesses, the defence is also expected to call into question the reliability of the prosecution's forensics.

Pistorius walked free on bail a year ago as the chief detective on the case and the prosecution's star witness Hilton Botha was sacked amid a scandal over botched handling of evidence.

A single judge, Thokozile Masipa -- aided by two assistants -- will rule in the case, which has already been likened to the murder trial of American footballer OJ Simpson over the killing of his ex-wife and a friend in 1995.

Russia keeps pressure on Ukraine with Crimea stand-off

Russian and Ukrainian troops in Crimea are involved in a tense stand-off but fears of an imminent Russian assault have eased.
Ukraine's main military bases on the peninsula remain surrounded by Russian forces. Thousands of Russian troops have been pouring into Crimea.
An alleged ultimatum for Ukrainian forces to surrender - denied by Moscow - expired without incident.
Russia says its troops went in upon a request by the ousted president.
Viktor Yanukovych asked Russia to send troops across the border to protect civilians, Moscow's UN envoy Vitaly Churkin told the Security Council.
He said Mr Yanukovych had written to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Russian troops who were on exercises in western Russia, near the Ukrainian border, have been ordered back to barracks after completing their tasks, the Kremlin says.
Up to 150,000 personnel were involved in the exercises, which started last week.
The BBC's Richard Galpin in Moscow says the exercises had fuelled fears that Russia was preparing its armed forces for a full invasion of Ukraine.
Ukraine's economy relies on Russian gas - and on Tuesday the head of Russia's gas monopoly Gazprom, Alexei Miller, said that from April Ukraine would no longer get discounted gas, because it had violated its agreements.
In Crimea, two Ukrainian warships are reported to be blocked by a Russian minesweeper in the port of Sevastopol.
The Ukrainian navy headquarters in the city was surrounded by pro-Russian gunmen and civilians, who formed a human chain.
And at Crimea's Belbek air base in Sevastopol, pro-Russian troops who have seized it fired warning shots into the air to prevent around 300 Ukrainian soldiers approaching, the Associated Press news agency reports.

No room for another party in alliance: Shiv Sena after Gadkari-Raj meeting

The Shiv Sena on Tuesday expressed its unhappiness over its ally Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) attempts to woo Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray.
The Sena was reacting over the meeting between senior BJP leader Nitin Gadkari and the MNS chief to discuss possibilities of joining hands with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
"There is no room for another party in the alliance. We had extended our hand when MNS had refused it. As an alliance, we are strong enough to defeat the Congress government," said Sena MP and spokesperson Sanjay Raut.
He added that what Gadkari did was in his personal capacity and not on behalf of his party.

"In Maharashtra, it is Gopinath Munde and Devendra Fadnavis who call the shots," Raut added.
He said that this kind of confusion in the BJP will affect the vote share of the alliance.
The Sena leader also expressed confidence of his party firmly holding onto the Marathi electorate in Maharashtra.
"Marathi votes will remain with Shiv Sena only. Nobody can dare take it away from us," he said.
"The Shiv Sena-BJP alliance will defeat Congress-NCP and would win as many as 40 seats out of the total 48 Lok Sabha in Maharashtra," Raut claimed.
Meanwhile, Raj held a meeting with his legislators on Tuesday to discuss his strategy.
"Whatever decision he takes will be in the benefit of Marathi manoos and Maharashtra. We are ready with our candidate list," MNS legislator Bala Nandgaonkar said.
Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray had expressed his displeasure over the Gadkari-Raj meeting saying that there is a communication gap within the BJP.
"Those within the BJP who are praising Congress-NCP leaders are responsible for creating a communication gap. It is the internal matter of the BJP but the Mahayuti is determined to unseat the Congress-NCP government," said Uddhav.
He also called BJP chief Rajnath Singh and summoned Maharashtra BJP chief Fadnavis over the matter on Monday night.
Garkari met the MNS chief on Monday in a Mumbai hotel without the Sena's knowledge and reportedly appealed to him to abstain from contesting the Lok Sabha elections to avoid splitting the anti-Congress vote.
After the meeting, Gadkari had told reporters that he discussed ways to get rid of the Congress government with the MNS chief.
"There is no reason for Uddhav Thackeray to be annoyed over my meeting Raj... I meet everybody including Congress people," he said.
"We want to ensure that the Congress-NCP don't benefit from a split in the anti-Congress vote. If the MNS abstains it will help the Shiv Sena candidates. Don't think the Sena is upset," he said.
The BJP state president too denied that the Sena is upset. He said in a tweet that the meeting with Uddhav was a scheduled one to discuss the BJP-Sena joint campaign.
However, RPI(A) led by Ramdas Athawale, also an important constituent of the Mahayuti led by BJP and Shiv Sena, said he would "welcome" Raj into NDA-fold.
MNS' high-pitch debut in 2009 elections had caused a large scale division of Marathi votes and ensured the defeat of Sena candidates in Lok Sabha and assembly polls.

With folded hands, I ask you to save us: Sahara chief Subrata Roy in Supreme Court

Mumbai/New Delhi:  Subrata Roy, the chief of the Sahara conglomerate, told the Supreme Court today, "with folded hands, I am begging you to save us.  Give us time," he urged, vowing that "every direction" of the court would be followed.

Despite his apology, the court ordered him to remain in police custody till the next hearing of the case. (Who is Subrata Roy? 10-point cheat-sheet)

Sahara has been ordered by the court to repay thousands of small investors in towns and villages. Its offer to sell different properties to raise funds - an offer Mr Roy made again today seeking reprieve of "three-four months" - has been rejected by the Supreme Court; market regulator the Securities and Exchange Board of India or Sebi has said that these properties are massively over-valued and that their sale will not fetch the 20,000 crore rupees that needs to be raised to refund investors.  (What may have led to Sahara chief Subrata Roy's arrest)

Sahara says it has repaid most investors and that its remaining liability is less than the 5,000 crore rupees it has deposited with Sebi. The regulator says it has been unable to sift through truckloads of paper that Sahara sent as evidence that it has refunded the investors.

As he arrived at the Supreme Court today, Mr Roy, the 65-year-old head of India's biggest private-sector employer, was sprayed with ink by a man who was beaten up by lawyers and handed over to the police. "He robs the poor," said the ink-thrower.

Last week, Mr Roy skipped a court appearance, prompting an arrest warrant.  He turned himself in to the police in Lucknow on Friday.  (Sahara chief Subrata Roy arrested, son says as law abiding citizen he surrendered)

Today, the judges told Mr Roy, "You push us to the corner. Had you been serious, this position would not have arrived."

Mr Roy apologized for his absence, claiming that his reasons were genuine.  His lawyers say he was attending to his ailing 92-year-old mother.

Sahara's core business includes selling financial products, largely to small investors. Two such products that were ruled illegal in 2012, drew Sebi's attention. A court order asked Sahara to repay 24,000 crore rupees plus interest to nearly three million investors.
