Baby doll Sunny Leone grooves to Honey Singh's 'Chaar Bottle Vodka' in 'Ragini MMS 2

After Baby Doll, Sunny Leone is back with the much-talked-about item number Chaar Bottle Vodka from her upcoming film Ragini MMS 2. The makers have released the song and it looks quite impressive.
As expected, Sunny Leone has turned up the heat quotient in the latest song and you get to see the sex bomb grooving around rapper Honey Singh. And we must say the two make quite a pair.
A club number, the song is peppy and will get you on the dance floor in no time, and if you are a fan of Yo Yo's irreverent lyrics with desi tadka, this one will not disappoint you either.
Overall, the latest number from the film looks quite promising and may help the film sail through as the trailer doesn't offer much hope. While we wait for the song, check out the song here:

US, Britain: No 'Zero Sum Game' for Ukraine

Following a meeting Tuesday with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Washington and London hope Ukraine can form an "inclusive government."

However, while Hague said the primary goal is a "free, democratic Ukraine," he does not view the situation as a "zero-sum" game.

"It is very important for Ukraine to be able to work closely with European nations and the European Union in good economic cooperation, but also of course to be able to cooperate with Russia on many issues, and so Secretary Kerry and I have both been talking to [Russian] Foreign Minister [Sergei] Lavrov over recent days and we will continue that contact with Russia as well," said Hague.

Russia on Tuesday also insisted it would not interfere in Ukrainian politics. Foreign Minister Lavrov said it is "dangerous and counterproductive" to force the country into a choice between Russia and Europe.

Yanukovych fled the capital on Saturday following three months of sometimes violent protests that erupted after he rejected an EU trade deal in favor of economic assistance from Russia, the country's former Soviet master.

There are concerns the financially strapped country of 46 million could split into a pro-Russia east and pro-EU west.

Interim President Oleksandr Turchynov warned Tuesday in parliament that there are "very dangerous signs of separatism" in several parts of the country.

Earlier in the day, Turchynov announced that plans to elect a new national unity government would be postponed until Thursday.

The moves come as EU and U.S. leaders meet with Ukrainian leaders to work on ways that Western financial institutions can help Ukraine, which many say is on the verge of economic collapse.

Also Tuesday, the parliament voted to send fugitive ousted president Yanukovych to the International Criminal Court to be tried for crimes committed during the anti-government demonstrations, including the murder of scores of protesters.

Acting interior minister Arsen Avakhov said Yanukovych was last seen in the pro-Russian Crimea region of Ukraine, but that the ousted leader's exact whereabouts are not clear.

Sonia Gandhi accuses Samajwadi Party govt of not using central funds

LUCKNOW: With the last session of 15th Lok Sabha over, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday opened attack against ally Samajwadi Party during her maiden trip to Rae Bareli this year. Expressing deep dissatisfaction over the lax way in which the Uttar Pradesh government has spent Central government funds, Sonia said the government could have done much more for the welfare of poor.

Sonia's remarks came during surprise inspections of some development works in the region. She also assessed the availability of basic infrastructure facilities in a minority populated village. Hinting that the village belonged to a community whose vote SP government depended on, Sonia's barb came at a time when all major parties in UP, including the Congress, are trying to woo Muslim voters.

Sonia also inspected the construction site of Rae Bareli's All India Institute of Medical Sciences. She also met with party workers, including Gulabi Gang's Sampat Pal and her band of women at the Bhuvemau guest house in the morning. Later in the day, she met with people in the constituency and heard their grievances. Over the past year, Sonia has largely stayed away from hectic travel within her constituency, handing over the reins for nurturing Rae Bareli to daughter Priyanka instead. However, with the Lok Sabha elections approching, the Congress president made her maiden two-day trip in over six months, and made her first public attack against the state government in UP. For the Congress, UP with 80 Lok Sabha seats, is especially significant. At present, Congress has 22 MPs from the state.

Asia Cup Live Cricket Score: Bangladesh Tigers look Virat Kohli-led India in the eye

Embarrassed in South Africa and New Zealand, regional powerhouse India would hope for a turnaround under a new captain when they take on a troubled Bangladesh in their Asia Cup opener here on Wednesday. (We'll not take Bangladesh lightly, says Dinesh Karthik)

For the five-time champions India, the build up to the 12th edition of the regional tournament has been quite similar to that of 2012 when they landed here on the back of eight successive Test defeats in England and Australia.

Now they have come here after losing to South Africa 0-1 in Tests and 0-2 in ODIs. They suffered similar humiliation at the hands of New Zealand. The world champion side capped their two overseas tours with four successive defeats in ODIs.
However, playing against an opponent, who are struggling with their own set of problems and against whom they enjoy a good record, India would hope to finally notch up their first win in the 2014 calender.

Bangladesh's attacking opener Tamim Iqbal has been ruled out of the event because of a neck strain and their all-rounder Shakib-Al-Hasan will also miss the action against India due to his two-match ban for showing lewd gestures on live TV. (Read more)

Beating India is no longer an upset, says Mashrafe Mortaza

Bangladesh's premier pacer Mashrafe Mortaza on Tuesday said that beating a heavyweight Indian cricket team is no longer considered as an "upset" as the hosts have defeated them on a few occasions in the near past including the last edition of Asia Cup. "I don't count a win against India as an upset. We have done it before. They are a good team in sub-continent. We have that in our mind," the 30-year-old said ahead of their Asia Cup opener against India on Wednesday. (Read more)

Sourav Ganguly's advice to Virat Kohli

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly wants Virat Kohli to win the Asia Cup, which he believes would help regular skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni to come out of his comfort zone and reinvent himself as a captain.

"I want Virat (Kohli) to win this tournament (Asia Cup)," Ganguly told a news channel on Tuesday.

"This would help Dhoni to come out of the comfort zone and help him to reinvent himself as a captain," he explained. Rubbishing suggestions that it would be a test for Kohli as a captain, Ganguly said the Delhi batsman should enjoy captaincy and prove his strengths to the selectors.

"It would be inappropriate to say that Kohli would be under pressure in the Asia Cup because even he knows that Dhoni would be the captain in the Twenty20 World Cup. So I would advice him to enjoy his captaincy and prove his strengths as a captain," Ganguly said

MWC2014: First look – Samsung Galaxy S5, Gear 2, Gear Fit

The company has unveiled its new Galaxy S5 smartphone, which is set to go on sale in April, along with a pair of watches. And many of the features included on the devices focus on fitness.

Considering America's continued fascination with personal health and health-related products, this is probably a good idea. What Samsung has attempted to do is combine the best attributes of the top-of-the-line fitness trackers currently on the market with those of its own phones and smartwatches.

The S5 and the watches were unveiled at an event at the Mobile World Congress wireless show in Barcelona, Spain. I had a chance to briefly test out all three products in New York on Monday.

The S5 includes a built-in heart rate monitor, pedometer and fitness tracker, though I'm not sure how useful they actually are. For instance, to check your heart rate, you hold your finger over a sensor on the back of the phone - something I can't imagine doing in the middle of a jog.

True fitness buffs will probably head straight for Samsung's Gear Fit smartwatch, which also does all of those things, but in a much more user-friendly way. Want to check your heart rate? Just open up the app for that and it gives you a reading within seconds.

While many people have become accustomed to wearing fitness bands either constantly or for their workouts, I think a lot of them would balk at going running with, or perpetually being tethered to, a phone as big as the S5.

It's worth mentioning too that the Fit Gear is very nicely styled. I have to admit, I wasn't a fan of Samsung's first Galaxy Gear smartwatch, because it felt heavy and clunky and was just too big for a normal-sized woman's wrist. But the Fit solves that problem. It's thin, light and features a curved color screen. If you don't mind wearing something like a Fitbit Force or a Nike FuelBand, you won't mind this product either.

The trade-off is you can't place or answer a call from the Fit, but it will notify you of things like calls, emails and text messages. There's also no camera.

Samsung's new Gear 2 watch also comes with basic fitness features including the heart rate monitor and pedometer. While it's still too chunky for me, it is significantly lighter and thinner than the original version.

Unlike the Fit, you can still place calls from it and shoot pictures and video from its camera. But are those features really important? It was tough to shoot a decent picture with the original watch's camera and making or taking a call from the phone wasn't easy either, especially with any kind of noise in the background.

One nice change is that unlike Samsung's first smartwatch, the new ones pair with a host of Samsung phones, giving consumers more options for their primary device.

Samsung also plans to introduce a slightly cheaper version called the Gear 2 Neo, which won't have a camera or come in as many colors. The company has yet to announce pricing for any of the new products.

Fitness aside, the S5 phone includes some other significant upgrades from its predecessor. Some of the biggest changes are in its camera. Its 16 megapixels make it sharper than the S4, which had just 13. It's also designed to focus faster and lets you blur the foreground or background of an image to emphasize a subject.

The phone also has a fingerprint sensor to use in place of a passcode to unlock the phone or make mobile payments. And it is splash and dust resistant, which is bound to prolong the phone's life for many people.

An added incentive for parents is the phone's "Kids Mode," which lets you hand your phone off to your child without fear that they'll stream something inappropriate from your Netflix cue or access your email.

In short, the S5's improvements might be enough to entice current Samsung fans to upgrade their devices, while its fitness features could draw some converts as well, especially those interested in purchasing a smartwatch to go along with it.

BJP president Rajnath Singh woos Muslims with offer of apology for mistakes

NEW DELHI: BJP president Rajnath Singh on Tuesday sought to bridge a trust deficit between his party and Muslims by saying that he was ready to apologize for any mistakes committed by the party in the past and urged the community to give the saffron outfit at least one chance.

Singh's remarks immediately sparked speculation that the BJP chief was referring to events like the 2002 Gujarat riots or Babri Masjid demolition. "Try us once. If we don't come up to your expectations, don't look at us ever again," he said at the event 'Modi for PM - Mission 272+ - Role of Muslims'.

According to a PTI report, Singh said, "Please note that whenever, wherever, if there has been any mistake and shortcoming on our part, I assure you that we will apologize to you by bowing our heads."

Singh's political secretary Sudhanshu Trivedi told TOI that Singh sought to address a perception that BJP is anti-Muslim and wanted to counter the impression. "The BJP president said if Muslims feel that wittingly or unwittingly, there have been mistakes on our part, he is ready to make amends," Trivedi said.

Singh's comments, while interpreted by BJP leaders as an emotional pitch at Muslims, also raised a question if the BJP chief was suggesting that the Gujarat riots were a serious weakness in the BJP campaign.

Though BJP leaders said Singh's remarks did not amount to acceptance of culpability for the Gujarat riots and pointed out that the party's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi was exonerated by the courts, the outreach did generate ripples in political circles.

On a similar note, but in less dramatic terms, leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley said BJP had been pleasantly surprised by the success of minority candidates fielded by it in states like Goa and Rajasthan. He said BJP stressed the principles of equality and security for all citizens

Supreme Court gives govt two days to make up mind on Italian marines

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the Centre to file an affidavit by Friday on its final decision on contentious anti-piracy charges against two Italian marines, arrested for allegedly killing two fishermen off the Kerala coast two years ago.

Attorney general GE Vahanvati said "the Indian government is doing its best to help the marines" and told a bench of justices BS Chauhan and MY Eqbal that law minister Kapil Sibal, external affairs minister Salman Khurshid and home minister Sushilkumar Shinde had met to resolve the issue last Thursday and entrusted the law minister with taking a decision.

"The decision from the law minister is expected in two-three days," the AG said. This prompted the bench to ask for the Centre's affidavit on the issue by Friday. It posted the petition on behalf of marines Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone, filed by Italian ambassador Daniele Mancini, for hearing on Monday.

Since the chargesheet against the marines had been readied but not filed, the AG hoped that the government would be able to resolve whether Suppression of Unlawful Acts Against Safety of Maritime Navigation and Fixed Platforms on Continental Shelf Act (SUA Act) provisions be applied against the marines.

Italy had strongly objected to slapping of Sections 3(a) and 3(g) of SUA as it mandates imposition of death penalty on conviction. Later, the government decided to drop Section 3(g) from the yet to be filed chargesheet. But this failed to calm Italy's ruffled feathers leading to the meeting between three Union ministers.

Given the confusion within the government and its ministers on invoking SUA, engagement of National Investigation Agency and frequent shifting of stand on the case, the Italian ambassador did not miss the chance to take pot shots at the government despite clear directions from the apex court a year ago for expeditious trial of the marines.

Mancini's counsel Mukul Rohatgi said the reported decision of the government to drop Section 3(g) of SUA against the marines was not acceptable to Italy. "They (Indian government) have changed their stand six times. Every time they say we are invoking this, we are invoking that. You have three ministers who can't read an Act," Rohatgi said.

He requested the court to allow the marines to return to Italy and promised that they would come back as and when the government readies the chargesheet.

After Anna Hazare, Mamata Banerjee's meeting, Trinamool's 'mega political announcement' today

New Delhi Gandhian activist Anna Hazare and Mamata Banerjee had a dinner meeting and shared warm vibes on Tuesday ahead of what is widely expected to be an announcement on his role in her campaign for the national election, due by May.

The Trinamool Congress has called the media for a "mega political announcement" today.

Yesterday, Mamata Banerjee touched the 75-year-old social activist's feet thrice when he arrived for the meeting at the Trinamool headquarters in Delhi. Her demeanour contrasted sharply with her criticism of Anna's movement for the Lokpal, or anti-corruption ombudsman, almost three years ago.

In a similar change of stand on politics, which he had once described as a cesspool, Anna Hazare has decided to campaign for Ms Banerjee and her Trinamool Congress for the  election. After meeting the West Bengal Chief Minister yesterday, he explained why.

"She is living a simple life. She is not using government's car, bungalow nor salary. Who does all this these days? The country wants this kind of leadership," the social activist told reporters.

Anna also said Ms Banerjee had agreed to implement his 17-point charter for political parties. It reportedly includes resolving problems faced by people whose land has been acquired for projects, banning Foreign Direct Investment in retail and ending black money.

He had sent the charter to every political party, he said, but only Ms Banerjee responded.

Ms Banerjee had launched her campaign for the Lok Sabha elections last month with a call to her party to look towards Delhi. "BJP is not the alternative to Congress. Congress is not the alternative to BJP. Trinamool is the only alternative in the country today," she told a massive rally in Kolkata last month

Telangana bill clears LS hurdle, Andhra CM Reddy to resign, all eyes on Rajya Sabha today

A day after the contentious Telangana bill was passed in Lok Sabha, it is likely to be placed before Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, where the ruling dispensation does not enjoy a majority.
Congress strategists have not rule out the possibility of the BJP pushing further amendments to the bill in the Upper House.
Any change in the bill will require a fresh approval from Lok Sabha as well, which might delay its passage.
Among other political fallouts of the bifurcation, state chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy, who has been resisting the division, might resign on Wednesday and float a new party.
Read: Kiran Kumar Reddy likely to resign today over passage of Telangana bill
The state is also likely to see a bandh called by YSR Congress chief Jaganmohan Reddy who had said that the decision to create Telangana was a "black day" for the country.
In the light of last week's proceedings in Lok Sabha when Seemandhra MP L Rajagopal sprayed pepper and another MP broke a microphone 16 MPs were suspended, all eyes are now on the Upper House.
Meanwhile, security in the Seemandhra region of Andhra Pradesh has been beefed up and forces were put on alert to meet any eventuality on the law and order front.
"We are monitoring the situation... police in districts have already been asked to be on alert... depending upon the situation we will take appropriate action," additional director general of police (law and order) VSK Kaumudi said.
Ever since the Centre took a decision last year to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh to create Telangana, agitational programmes such as bandhs, massive protests and demonstrations were being held in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions (collectively called Seemandhra) against the move.

Bill passed in Lok Sabha
The process to create Telangana, India's 29th state, crossed the major Lok Sabha hurdle on Tuesday with the BJP coming in support of the UPA to clear the Andhra Pradesh State Re-organisation Bill amid din.
The House saw a rare scene when the bill's supporters had to frequently stand up for head count as Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar chose to ignore the repeated demand for a division or voting.

The live telecast in Lok Sabha TV also went off air suddenly. Lok Sabha secretariat later cited technical problems for the blackout.
During the past few months, several Congress lawmakers have been protesting for and against the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.
On Tuesday, as the bill was slated for a discussion and passage, Trinamool Congress and its arch rival, Left parties, together jammed the Well of the House. Samajwadi Party and a few Congress MPs and ministers from Seemandhra also stood in the Well.
TMC members were shouting "aaj ka din kala hai, Rahul-Modi joda hai and Sushma-Sonia jodi hai (today is a black day as Rahul and Modi and Sushma and Sonia have ganged up)".
After the first two attempts to pass the bill failed at 12pm and 12.45pm due to din, Lok Sabha finally took up the matter at 3pm.
A significant part of the visitors' gallery was cleared minutes after home minister Sushilkumar Shinde sought leave of the House for the passage of the bill.

Four Rajiv Gandhi killers, including Nalini Sriharan, to be freed, decides Tamil Nadu government

Chennai The Tamil Nadu government has decided to release three men and one woman convicted of killing former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991. The death sentence of the men was commuted to life in prison by the Supreme Court yesterday.

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's cabinet met this morning and decided to free the four convicts a day after the court had left it to the state government to grant them remission. Murugan's wife Nalini Sriharan's death sentence had been commuted earlier on the intervention of Rajiv Gandhi's widow, Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

While sparing the three men from the gallows, a bench headed by the Chief Justice of India, P Sathasivam, said, "It is definitely not a pleasure for this court to interfere with the powers of the President. We implore upon the government to advise the President so that mercy petitions can be disposed of at the earliest."

The court did not accept the government's view that the convicts did not deserve mercy. The Centre's lawyer, Attorney General Goolam Vahanvati, had said there was "not a word of remorse" in their mercy plea and there was "no agony, torture or dehumanizing effect due to delay."

The Supreme Court had on January 21 commuted the death sentences of 15 convicts, announcing that "inordinate and inexplicable" delays in carrying out executions were grounds for reducing their original punishment.

Santhan, Murugan and Perarivalan were convicted in 1998 for Mr Gandhi's assassination by a woman who greeted him with a garland and a bomb strapped to her chest during a rally in 1991. Their mercy petition was sent to the President, the last stage in the process of appeals, in 2000 and was rejected 11 years later. Their hanging was stayed in 2011 on the orders of the Madras High Court.

That year, the Tamil Nadu assembly had passed a resolution urging the President to grant mercy to the convicts and consider "Tamil sentiment."

President’s rule imposed in Delhi

Central rule was on Monday imposed in Delhi and the Legislative Assembly kept in suspended animation after President Pranab Mukherjee accepted the resignation of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
Making a suo moto statement in both Houses of Parliament, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said following a factual report sent by Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung, the Union Cabinet had recommended imposition of President’s Rule in Delhi.
“The Hon’ble President has accepted the resignation of Arvind Kejriwal, Chief Minister of the GNCT of Delhi and his Council of Ministers and also approved the imposition of President’s Rule while keeping the Legislative Assembly in suspended animation,” he said in identical statement made in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
Mr. Shinde said the Council of Ministers of the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi tendered its resignation on February 14.
The resignation of the AAP government came after it failed to introduce the Jan Lokpal Bill for the consideration of the Legislative Assembly.
“The bill was a finance bill and necessitated prior reference to the Central Government by the Lieutenant Governor which procedure had not been followed by the Government of NCT of Delhi,” Mr. Shinde said.
According to a statement issued by the LG office, the President will now act through the Lt. Governor for administering the National Capital Territory.
“In exercise of the functions and powers assumed by the President... it shall be lawful for President to act to such extent as he thinks fit through the Lt Governor for administering National Capital Territory in accordance with the provision of Article 239 and Article 239AA,” the statement said.
Mr. Jung had sent a report to the President on the political situation in Delhi in the wake of resignation of the Aam Aadmi Party government. He had also forwarded the resignation of AAP government to the President along with the report.
The AAP government had recommended to the Lt. Governor to dissolve the Assembly and hold fresh elections.

Venezuela president expels three US consular officials

Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro is expelling three US consular officials, accusing them of meeting students involved in anti-government protests.
The country has seen growing political tension and rallies, with three protesters dying in clashes last week.
An arrest warrant has been issued for opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez, who has pledged to lead a march in the capital Caracas on Tuesday.
The US has expressed concern about arrests of opposition protesters.
Mr Maduro did not name the US officials being expelled, when he made the announcement in a national TV broadcast, but said the foreign ministry would give details later.
"It's a group of US functionaries who are in the universities. We've been watching them having meetings in the private universities for two months. They work in visas," the president said.
"Venezuela doesn't take orders from anyone!" he added.
On Saturday, US Secretary of State John Kerry issued a statement expressing concern about the rising tensions in Venezuela.
"We are particularly alarmed by reports that the Venezuelan government has arrested or detained scores of anti-government protestors and issued an arrest warrant for opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez," read the statement.
The main opposition grievances are high inflation, crime and the shortage of some staples.
The government has blamed the shortages on "saboteurs" and "profit-hungry corrupt businessmen".
'Dress in white' Opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez was last seen on Wednesday, when three men were shot dead at the end of opposition protests in the capital
Leopoldo Lopez is a former mayor of Chacao, in eastern Caracas
President Nicolas Maduro says an arrest warrant was issued against Mr Lopez shortly after the incidents.
Mr Maduro has accused Mr Lopez of inciting violence as part of a coup plot against his left-wing government.
The opposition say they were killed by pro-government militias known as "colectivos".
Mr Lopez, 42, is a former mayor of Chacao district, in eastern Caracas. He organised the recent protests against the government.
On Sunday morning, Venezuelan police searched the houses of Mr Lopez and his parents.
Hours later, he posted a new message on Twitter and a three-minute long video. He said he had not committed any crime and challenged the authorities to arrest him at the next protest.
"I want to invite all of you to join me on a march on Tuesday from Venezuela Square [in central Caracas] towards the Justice Ministry building, which has become a symbol of repression, torture and lies," Mr Lopez said on the video.
He called on his supporters to dress in white, "to reaffirm our commitment to peace".
"I will be there to show my face. I have nothing to fear. I have not committed any crime. If there is any order to illegally arrest me, well, I will be there," added Mr Lopez.
For his part, President Maduro called on oil workers from the state company PDVSA to march to the presidential palace on Tuesday.

Kerry: Russia Enabling Syria's Pursuit of Military Path

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry says the Syrian government is trying to win a military victory over the opposition, and that Russia is enabling President Bashar al-Assad on that path.

Speaking Monday in Jakarta, Kerry said Syria's strategy is evident in its continuing barrel bombing of civilians, and that Russia's deliveries of arms and aid are helping Mr. Assad's pursuit of a military solution over a political end to the civil war.

"It is very clear that Bashar al-Assad is continuing to try to win this in the battlefield rather than to come to the negotiating table in good faith."

VOA correspondent Scott Stearns, who is traveling with Kerry, said the secretary wants the international community to use a break in the talks to figure out how best to pursue a political solution.

"He said the United States still believes that there is no military solution to the war in Syria, but it's his opinion that the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is pursuing just that, a military solution, a military solution in the opinion of the United States that's aided by Iran, Hezbollah and Russia. He said Russia needs to stop being part of the problem and play a more active role in being a part of the political solution."

Russia has been both an ally of Mr. Assad and, along with the United States, a lead player in bringing the Syrian sides together for the peace talks.

On Sunday, Kerry said in a statement that all parties involved in the peace talks knew they would be difficult, but that "obstruction" by the Assad government is making the process even harder. He also praised Syrian opposition groups, saying they have presented a "viable and well-reasoned roadmap" for a transitional government in Syria.

Meanwhile, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem cast blame at the United States, saying it worked to create a negative climate at the negotiations in Geneva.

The second round of peace talks ended Saturday with no agreement. A third round of negotiations has not been scheduled.

Also Sunday, the United Nations said it was not able distribute food aid for a ninth consecutive day at the Yarmouk refugee camp in Damascus, which is home to thousands of Palestinians who have been there since before the Syrian civil war began.

A U.N. spokesman called on authorities and all parties to allow food, medicine and other humanitarian aid to be distributed, saying it is "a matter of the greatest urgency."

Kerry is traveling Monday to Abu Dhabi, where the Syrian crisis will be part of his meetings with officials.

"As you know, the Gulf states have largely pushed for a more active military presence in support of the opponents of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. There's been some disagreement among some Gulf allies of the United States who feel that Washington has not done enough militarily to actively support the Syrian opposition."

The secretary's talks in Abu Dhabi will also include the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and Iran's nuclear program.

Shuddhi has a release date, cast to follow, tweets Karan Johar

It was meant to be the screen reunion of Kareena Kapoor an Hrithik Roshan 10 years after films like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Yaadein and Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon. However, after both Kareena and Hrithik exited and Deepika was maybe-maybe not signing up for the role, Bollywood pundits got busy laying Shuddhi's ghost to rest.

But don't write this filmy obituary just yet. Producer Karan Johar has pre-empted further dismissals by announcing that he has a release date, if not yet a cast.

The Dharma Productions chief tweeted on February 15: SHUDDHI will release on Friday the 25th of December,2015...the Lead cast will be announced shortly.

Earlier this month, Hrithik Roshan announced his departure in this statement: "Karan Malhotra and I have decided to unite in the most ambitious way post Shuddhi. For now, I cannot allow a vision like Shuddhi to stagnate any further. " Karan Malhotra, director of Shuddhi, previously directed Hrithik in 2012 blockbuster Agneepath.

Kareena Kapoor prevaricated with: "I will decide whether to do it. It will depend on my mood at that time. As of now I don't know what is happening regarding that film (Shuddhi) as since one and half years it is being postponed."

Authorities: Co-Pilot Took Control of Ethiopian Airlines Plane, Wanted Asylum

An Ethiopian Airlines jet en route from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to Rome was forced to land in Geneva on Monday after the co-pilot apparently took control of the aircraft in an attempt to seek asylum, authorities said.
Police arrested the co-pilot of Ethiopian Airlines flight 702 after the plane made an unscheduled landing at Geneva airport around 6 a.m. Central European Time, authorities said at a news conference.
The co-pilot was motivated to seek asylum because he felt threatened in his home country, according to the authorities.
The co-pilot, identified as an Ethiopian born in 1983, fled the aircraft through a cockpit window, the authorities said. No one was injured during the event.
After a temporary closure, the airport reopened for departures at 8 a.m. local time, with arrivals starting at about 8:45 a.m., according to a notice on the airport's website.

Modi rehashing UPA ideas but packaging himself better: Sharma

Union commerce and industry minister Anand Sharma on Saturday accused Narendra Modi of "political plagiarism", saying the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP's) prime ministerial candidate had nothing new to offer and was rehashing the Centre's achievements.

In an exclusive interview to HT, Sharma, however, admitted while Modi had "packaged himself well", the Congress could not successfully articulate its achievements owing to "communication failure".
"He (Modi) talks about industrial corridors when we (the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government) are already working on four of them.

"He talks about manufacturing sector. We have already notified 14 National Investment and Manufacturing Zones (NIMZ) and unveiled a National Manufacturing Policy," Sharma said. Even Modi can’t control inflation: Anand Sharma

The minister brushed aside Modi's campaign promise to build a Brand India by focusing on five Ts — tradition, talent, tourism, technology and trade.

"Are these new concepts in India? Did India ever lack any of these? He is recharging old ideas."

Sharma also said Modi had successfully marketed himself as a chief minister who had done wonders to Gujarat.

"It is not that we do not enjoy the confidence of the industries. But Modi has packaged himself well. He markets himself as a CM who has ensured phenomenal growth and made Gujarat a favourite destination of investments.

"The Opposition created an atmosphere, fuelled by a lot of untruths, fabrication and half-truths. This shrill negative narrative is hurting the India story and we allowed it to be loaded against us," Sharma said.

My mother, Harvard taught me the value of hard work: Chidambaram's dig at Narendra Modi

New Delhi :  Finance Minister P Chidambaram used the last budget of the UPA government to take a swipe at BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. "My mother and Harvard taught me the value of hard work," Mr Chidambaram said while presenting the interim budget.

It marked the latest chapter in his rivalry with Mr Modi, who, at a rally in Chennai earlier this month, had taunted him for his failure to revive the Indian economy despite his Harvard background.

"The Finance Minister is from Harvard. The Prime Minister is an economist and he too has a degree from a big university. I have hard work to my credit. Going to Harvard means nothing. What matters is hard work... A man who has just studied in an ordinary school, sold tea and has not even seen the doors of Harvard has shown what it takes to handle economy," the Gujarat chief minister had said.
With his budget speech being beamed live, Mr Chidambaram turned the reference to his Harvard credentials around to hit back at Mr Modi. He also sought to reassure the electorate that the worst phase of the Indian economy was over, and that it was back on the growth trajectory. "Our objectives were fiscal consolidation, reviving growth cycle, and enhancing manufacturing," Mr Chidambaram said, adding, "I can confidently assert that fiscal deficit is declining, the current account deficit is constrained, inflation is moderated, exchange rate is stable."
As the Congress embarks on its re-election bid, it has been haunted by charges of policy paralysis, which had hurt the manufacturing, export and other sectors, and failure to contain inflation, which had hit the poor and salaried classes hard. With general elections round the corner, the Finance Minister asserted India was back on the revival mode.

Kerry pushes China on North Korea nukes

By Simon Denyer and William Wan, Friday, February 14, 1:58 PM E-mail the writer

BEIJING — Secretary of State John F. Kerry said he had held a very constructive meeting with China’s President Xi Jinping on Friday as he sought Beijing’s help in deterring North Korea from pursuing nuclear weapons.

Nevertheless, experts said Kerry faced an uphill battle over the issue, with China unlikely to push its long-time ally too far over the issue, and unwilling to join a U.S.-led attempt to isolate the Pyongyang regime.
Kerry also has a tricky diplomatic task on his hands as he seeks to calm regional tensions and signal America’s unhappiness with a series of assertive steps taken by Beijing in territorial disputes with its smaller neighbors. At the same time, he is also seeking China’s help in tackling climate change.
He described his Friday morning meeting with Xi at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing as very positive. “I’m glad we had an opportunity to dig into the detail of some of the North Korea challenges,” he said. “And also I appreciate his willingness to move forward on the climate change initiative.”
Kerry had  on Thursday to coordinate with the South Koreans. But how exactly the United States can convince North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons program after decades of frustrated efforts remains a vexing problem with no immediate answers.
A senior State Department official traveling with Kerry described the trip as “an effort to translate ‘denuclearization’ from a noun to a verb.” The official, who was not authorized to be quoted by name, said Kerry wants to “enlist greater and greater levels of Chinese cooperation in actually helping to achieve the goal of denuclearization, not just talking about it.”
Since Kim Jong Il’s 2011 death and the elevation of his son Kim Jong Un, North Korea has issued a string of bellicose rhetoric and taken provocative actions, including a nuclear test last year that drew international condemnation. Analysts say signs in recent weeks suggest the renegade country may be on the verge of new missile and nuclear tests.
At the same time, Japan and South Korea — the United States’ two strongest allies in containing North Korea — have been heatedly disputing territorial and historical claims.
China remains the key to pushing North Korea toward denuclearization. Long seen as a key factor in propping up the Pyongyang regime, China has maintained stalwart support for North Korea for years — watering down international sanctions and sending desperately needed aid.
But early last year, after North Korea ignored its pleas to avoid the nuclear test, China began showing signs of frustration. Kerry and other U.S. officials said they were encouraged by the signs — such as tougher government statements and editorials debating China’s long-standing support of Pyongyang.
“China has responded. China has done positive things,” Kerry told reporters in Seoul, but he said that more is needed and vowed to ask the country “to use all the means at its disposal.”
“No country has a greater potential to influence North Korea behavior than China,” he said. “All of the refined fuel that goes in to move every automobile and airplane in North Korea comes from China. All of the fundamental, rudimentary banking structure it has with the world passes through China. Significant trade and assistance goes from China to North Korea.”
But China — which values stability above all else — is unlikely to abandon North Korea anytime soon. And much of its outspokenness against Pyongyang from last year has died down, especially after Kim Jong Un’s dramatic purge of his uncle Jang Song Thaek. Jang, Kim’s most prominent adviser, was executed in December and derided as “despicable human scum” by the regime.
“It’s been really quiet ever since then,” said Victor Cha, a Georgetown University professor and a national security official under President George W. Bush. “I think the Chinese are as worried by the shake-up as everyone else. They’re in wait-and-see mode.”
In a recent report, the International Crisis Group said China was reluctant to take any coercive action that might destabilize the regime in Pyongyang, and was likely to continue its policy of diplomatic engagement and economic cooperation. “China’s fundamental geostrategic calculation remains  and keeping it close,” it wrote, adding that a sustained shift towards a sterner policy had yet to take place and was unlikely any time soon.
Kerry was briefed by South Korean leaders Thursday on a rare diplomatic exchange between North and South Korea that happened the day before he arrived in Seoul.
For the first time in seven years, both sides held high-level talks on their armed border. The exchange has raised some hope of a thaw in the icy relations of late.
But analysts warn that such progress may be upset by joint military drills this month between the United States and South Korea that have traditionally drawn an angry reaction from Pyongyang.
This is Kerry’s fifth trip to Asia in his first year in office, but he has still to shake off a perception in some quarters he is more interested in the Middle East than in this part of the world.
The Obama administration says it wants to refocus American foreign policy on the Asia-Pacific, but that strategic rebalance has become something of a headache lately because of rising tensions between Japan and China, centered on about a chain of small, rocky islands.
Last November, China declared an air defense identification zone over much of the East China Sea, including over those islands, which are administered by Japan. It demanded that all noncommercial aircraft entering the zone identify themselves or face “defensive emergency measures”, a move that the United States saw as raising the risk of miscalculations and accidents that could spark a military conflict.
At the same time, China’s patrol vessels have kept a regular presence around the disputed islands, while its naval ships have also stepped up their presence in the South China Sea.
While China has portrayed the rebalance as a thinly veiled attempt to contain its rising power, U.S. allies worry that an Obama administration distracted by domestic politics or by other international crises has struggled to back up its rhetoric with a firm and consistent commitment to the region, which was scarcely mentioned in the State of the Union address.
Experts in Washington say the administration has also been perceived as sending mixed signals to Beijing, and some argue that Beijing has exploited what it perceives as weakness in Washington by becoming even more assertive.
In what seemed like an attempt to correct that perception, U.S. officials have ventured some unusually strong criticism of China’s actions this year.
“Five years in, the Obama administration appears to have learned the lesson of business in China. The nicer and more accommodating you are, the more you get played, sadly,” tweeted Bill Bishop, editor of the influential Sinocism newsletter, on Friday.
Beijing has responded by dismissing that U.S. criticism angrily. It blames Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe for heightened tensions, and was particularly angry in December when Abe visited to the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo, where 14 war criminals from World War II are honored
On Friday, China’s official Xinhua News Agency said the U.S.  into ceasing its “provocative moves” or risk a regional conflict in the future.
“The United States has to know that, while Beijing has always been trying to address territorial brawls with some neighboring countries through peaceful means, it will not hesitate to take steps to secure its key national security interests according to China’s sovereign rights,” Xinhua said.
“To dial down the flaring regional tensions, what Washington is expected to do right at the moment is not to blame China but press Japan to call off its provocative moves.”
U.S. officials traveling with Kerry said he would urge the Chinese to show restraint, cool down its rhetoric and actions, and clarify its claims consistent with international law.
“The perception in the region and in the United States that is generated by the incremental actions that China has been taking ... is one of a country that is asserting its position through extra-legal and non-diplomatic means,” one official said. “That’s not a good image of China, and it is not a pattern of behavior by China that the U.S. or others want to see.”

Thailand police reclaim two protest sites in Bangkok

Spring News TV reported.
Thailand police on Friday reclaimed two intersections held by anti—government protesters for months in the capital, but demonstrators vowed to retake them, news reports said.National Security Council Secretary-General Paradon Pattanatabut said police had succeeded in retaking two intersections leading to Government House, the seat of administration,
Early Friday, more than 2,000 riot police with shields and batons moved on the Missakawan and Nang Leung intersections in western Bangkok.
There were no reports of violence or clashes during the operation.
The intersections had been occupied since December by the Network of Student and People for Reform of Thailand (NSPRT), a militant faction of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) that has been staging mass anti—government protests in the capital since early November.
“We are still occupying other intersections in the area, because there are many routes to Government House,” said NSPRT leader Uthai Yodmanee. “We will take those two intersections back because that area belongs to us,” he told Spring News.
Police battalions were also deployed at several other protest sites

I asked my wife to stop joking when she said Rs 3.75 crore, says Karn Sharma

Karn Sharma had left home for the nearby cricket ground in Meerut much before his name had come up at the IPL auction on Thursday. This was, after all, his first ever experience as an uncapped player of being put up ‘on sale’. With not long to go for his name to prop up at the auction, the 26-year-old Railways man just couldn’t take the anxiety anymore, preferring to face a few local bowlers to keep his mind off proceedings in Bangalore.
While at nets, Sharma received a call from his wife. He was relieved to hear about being retained by Sunrisers Hyderbad, but the leggie couldn’t believe his ears when told that his franchise had spent Rs 3.75 crore to do so.
“I asked her to stop joking around and tell me exactly how much I had been bought for. My base price was just Rs 30 lakh. It was only when I checked the figure on the internet and received a call from Amit Mishra that I believed it,” says Sharma.
Sharma’s astonishment was understandable. He had been an important cog in the Sunrisers wheel during their maiden IPL season last year, picking up 11 wickets at an economy of 6.6. He had also played a couple of vital knocks with the bat to see his team home, while also attracting attention for managing to keep the likes of MS Dhoni and Michael Hussey quiet with his accuracy and guile.
Railman dreams big
But not even in his wildest dreams, he admits, did the Railways fitter, a Grade II post, expect to land up with the fattest pay-cheque among the hundreds of uncapped Indian players who went under the hammer on the second day of the auction.
“The most money I had seen come my way in my life previously was the Rs 20 lakh contract that I got in the IPL from Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2009. I don’t even know what 3.75 crore looks like. The most pleasing aspect for me about the auction was how so many teams were bidding for me,” he adds.
While his family hails from Meerut, Sharma has been posted in Varanasi ever since he joined the Railways back in 2005. Though he was initially roped in as a Grade IV employee, the former junior Uttar Pradesh cricketer was given the leeway of not having to perform the duties entailed at his level, odd jobs like lifting iron rods or working on the tracks.
“It involved some paperwork at the office, which I had to visit regularly. But that happened only during my first year after which I started playing cricket on a full-time basis,” he says.
Ever since, the spinner has seen himself being promoted as a fitter, a position that otherwise necessitates working at the nuts and bolts in the engine along with other responsibilities.

State Bank of India Q3 net profit down 34 pct, lags estimates

(Reuters) - State Bank of India (SBI) (SBI.NS), the country's largest lender, on Friday posted a fourth straight consecutive drop in net income as an increase in bad loans clipped profitability.
SBI followed its state-run peers Punjab National Bank (PNBK.NS), Canara Bank (CNBK.NS) and Bank of India (BOI.NS) in posting weak profits amid high defaults by corporates battling reduced cashflows, high inflation and delays in government approvals for projects.
SBI said on Friday that net profit fell more than a third to 22.34 billion rupees in the quarter ended December, lagging analysts' estimate of 25.3 billion rupees.
Non-performing loans as a percentage of total assets rose to 5.7 percent from 5.6 percent in the preceding quarter.
Last month, India's top private sector lender ICICI Bank (ICBK.NS) warned that corporate defaults would rise in the coming quarters as borrowers succumb to the pressure of a sluggish economy. ICICI posted its slowest profit growth in four years in the December quarter.
SBI shares, valued by the market at about $17 billion, were trading down 1.3 percent at 1,485 rupees.

New gender options for Facebook users

With a click of a cursor, Jay Brown went from Male to Trans Male. A few states away, Debon Garrigues switched from Male to Neutral. Marilyn Roxie, formerly Female, chose three- Androgynous, Transgender and Genderqueer.
Across the U.S. on Thursday, news swept through the transgender community that Facebook had added a customizable option with about 50 different terms people can use to identify their gender as well as three preferred pronoun choices- him, her or them. And one after another, they made their changes in a quiet revolution of sorts.
“For me, this is about much more than a button on a monitor,” Mr. Garrigues said. “This encourages people to think outside the binary spectrum. It means I don’t have to try to fit in the wrong boxes.”
For many others, the change went unnoticed or too far.
“Of course Facebook is entitled to manage its wildly popular site as it sees fit, but here is the bottom line- It’s impossible to deny the biological reality that humanity is divided into two halves — male and female,” said Jeff Johnston, an issues analyst for Focus on the Family, an influential national religious organization.
“Those petitioning for the change insist that there are an infinite number of genders, but just saying it doesn’t make it so. That said, we have a great deal of compassion for those who reject their biological sex and believe they are the opposite sex.”
Facebook said the changes, shared with Associated Press before the launch, initially cover the company’s 159 million monthly users in the U.S. and are aimed at giving people more choices in how they describe themselves, such as androgynous, bi-gender, intersex, gender fluid or transsexual.
“There’s going to be a lot of people for whom this is going to mean nothing, but for the few it does impact, it means the world,” said Facebook software engineer Brielle Harrison, who worked on the.
Facebook also allows users to keep their gender identity private.
The change at Facebook drew dozens of appreciative postings on the company’s diversity website, although some pointed out the need to make relationships gender neutral, rather than using terms such as son or daughter. Others asked for sexual orientation options. The company said they were already working on it.

A day after, Rajagopal justifies pepper spray

The Hindu in New Delhi.
Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal, who hit the headlines world over by his action of spraying pepper in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, has made it clear that he will not rest come what may till the decision to create Telangana is dropped. “I am determined to fight tooth and nail to keep Andhra Pradesh united”, he told
Mr. Rajagopal, who was expelled from the Congress a few days earlier for giving notice for moving a no-confidence motion against the UPA-II government, now stands suspended till Thursday next by Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar for his unruly act in the House.
He reiterated that he sprayed pepper as a self-defence technique and he had only pointed the can in the air and not against any other member. This was to prevent them from attacking him for opposing the Telangana bill and also for trying to save another member from Seemandhra — TDP’s Narasaraopet MP Modugula Venugopala Reddy. But he felt sorry as his act had caused lot of inconvenience to the fellow members and journalists in the press gallery.
The MP, who will be turning 50 on February 16, 2014, said after being escorted out of the House by security personnel he was taken a room in the first floor of the parliament complex where a doctor examined him as he too was affected by pepper spray. Thereafter he slept for two-three hours before coming out. He was not treated badly by the security staff, he said in response to a question.
He claimed that the Congress party had wantonly sent over 100 members to the Well of the House to take care of the protesting Seemandhra MPs. He sought to know why no member was suspended for attacking him and Mr. Modugula Venugopala Reddy.

Delhi CM Kejriwal to table jan lokpal bill despite L-G's opposition

On path to an imminent collusion, the Aam Aadmi Party government will go ahead and table the jan lokpal bill despite Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung's advice to Delhi assembly speaker asking him not to allow the bill to be introduced in the House, reports said.
The L-G had written to speaker MS Dhir saying he cannot allow the bill in the House as it violates constitutional provisions, sources said.
Sources added that the L-G has used the veto power vested in him under the Government of NCT of Delhi Act to prevent the bill to be introduced.
"Both the union home ministry and union ministry of law and justice have written to the L-G that introduction of a bill that may be repugnant to the central act needs prior assent from the President. The L-G has used his veto power and written to the Speaker," the source said.
Assembly sources said the L-G's message will be read in the House by the speaker and will be binding.
The chief minister's office however maintained that the government will seek referendum from the MLAs and will table the anti-corruption bill if they agreed.

Reports also said that a PIL has been filed in Delhi high court in connection with jan lokpal bill and that a hearing is expected later in the day.
The Congress, which provides external support to the AAP government, has called for a vote on the L-G's letter to decide whether the bill should be tabled in the House.
"A bill with financial consideration needs the involvement of the Lieutenant Governor. This is not a kangaroo court, Mr Kejriwal wants to write his own Constitution," Congress' Haroon Yusuf was quoted as saying.
The opposition BJP called Kejriwal a dictator and also said there is no question of bringing a bill that is unconstitutional.
Jung's move will further antagonise the Aam Aadmi Party government which insists on tabling it's showpiece legislation without his assent. CM Arvind Kejriwall has indicated that he will resign if the bill is not introduced.
Earlier in the day, reports said that Arvind Kejriwal-led government indicated that they will resign if jan lokpal bill was not introduced in the assembly, but not if the proposal was defeated in a vote.
"If the Congress and the BJP allow a vote on the bill, and it is defeated, we will not quit. If they block the bill's introduction, we will resign," AAP sources told NDTV.
"We came to power only for the jan lokpal and Swaraj bills."
Law minister Somnath Bharti was supposed to table the jan lokpal bill in the assembly at 2pm on Friday.

"We will try to introduce the jan lokpal bill on Friday. If it is beaten and defeated by the Congress and BJP, I will resign," Kejriwal had told reporters on Thursday in New Delhi.
The AAP wants to pass the bill, which is aimed at curbing corruption in high places, in this four-day session which started on Thursday. Saturday is the last working day of the special session called just to pass the two pieces of legislation that AAP had showcased in its manifesto for the Delhi assembly election.
But if the session was not allowed to be held on Saturday and on Sunday despite the chief minister's desire, it would be extended.
Kejriwal came down strongly on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the main opposition, and the Congress, which ostensibly props up his minority government.
The assembly witnessed a stormy day, with four adjournments and no business taking place on the floor of the House, CM Kejriwal alleged that the Congress and the BJP had joined hands and did not want the house to function.
This came as the Congress and BJP MLAs demanded law minister Somnath Bharti's resignation.

Talking to reporters at Delhi Secretariat after the assembly session, Kejriwal said Bharti was only a scapegoat.
"Their (Congress and BJP) main agenda was that the House should not function. They were raising all kinds of issues and storming to the well of the House one by one. Their actions were synchronised. Even when the Speaker agreed to the debate on Bharti, the two parties moved two quick resolutions and forced the House be adjourned for the day," the chief minister said.
Clearing his position on Delhi Lokpal Bill, 2014 Kejriwal said they can always take the permission of the Lieutenant Governor after introducing it in the House.
"Section 26 of transaction of business rules clearly says that the permission of the L-G can always be taken later," Kejriwal said.
Reiterating his position that Delhi government does not have to send the bill to the Centre for prior approval, Kejriwal said there was nothing in the Constitution of India making prior approval a must.
"For me, the Constitution of India is supreme and I abide by that. India has a federal structure where the central government and the state governments run parallel. We are authorised to make a law which is repugnant to a Central law. I know if we send the draft to the Centre it will never come back," he added.
Both the Congress and the BJP have agreed to support the jan lokpal bill only if it followed the “constitutional provisions”.

ndian Premier League auction: Glenn Maxwell strikes gold again, windfall for Nathan Coulter-Nile

Last year's million-dollar boy Glenn Maxwell struck gold once again in the 2014 Indian Premier League auctions underway in Bangalore on Wednesday. The Australian all-rounder was bought by Kings XI Punjab for six times his base price of Rs 1 crore. There was a three-way fight for Maxwell with Punjab making a late dash after Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Daredevils were locked in a tense tussle. Interestingly, Mumbai Indians, Maxwell's team last season, showed little interest in the limited overs specialist. (Full player list)

New Zealand all-rounder Corey Anderson was Mumbai's latest big buy. The Ambani-sponsored franchise loves to test fresh talent and it didn't come as a surprise when Neeta Ambani was quickly off the blocks after Rajasthan made the first bid. Anderson is the latest craze in limited overs cricket after striking a world record 36-ball ODI century against the West Indies on January 1, 2014. Anderson, who bowls medium-pace, has been in great form against India at home and was one of the top attractions of the IPL auctions. Delhi and Sunrisers Hyderabad also showed great interest in the Kiwi star-in-the making but in the final stretch, Mumbai won the battle by offering to pay Rs 4.5 crore. Hyderabad were next best at 4.25 Crore. (RCB buy Yuvraj for record 14 crore, Dinesh Karthik second costliest at 12.5 crore)

Delhi Daredevils, coached by former South African batsman Gary Kirsten and mentored by former pacer T.A. Sekar, fought a fierce battle with Rajasthan royals for Aussie pacer Nathan Coulter-Nile. Nile was snapped up the Daredevils for 4.25 crore. Interestingly, teams reposed their faith on Indian pacers too. Experienced customers like Laxmipathy Balaji and Ashish Nehra were still good enough to get more than their base price. Balaji, base price 50 lakhs, went to Kings XI for 1.8 crore while Nehra was bought by Chennai at his base cost of Rs 2 crore.

Jaydev Unadkat, the left-arm quickie, who has been in and out of the Indian team was quite in demand. Delhi, Rajasthan and Punjab were engaged in a grim bidding war. Delhi got him for Rs 2.8 crore, 20 lakh more than the more experience Ishant Sharma, who was retained by Hyderabad. Mohit Sharma was retained by CSK for twice his base price of Rs 1 crore while Varun Aaron was taken by RCB for 2 crore after Delhi did not use their right-to-match option.

Interim rail budget: No fare hike, 72 new trains

NEW DELHI: Railway minister Mallikarjun Kharge presented the interim rail budget for the next fiscal on Wednesday with no hike in fares or freight, introducing 72 new trains and connectivity to two more northeastern states.

In what was his personal first and the last such exercise in the 15th Lok Sabha for the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, Kharge also promised a new tariff-setting body and said work on eastern and western freight corridors was progressing well.

The minister only read a part of his speech, for all of 14 minutes in the lower house of parliament. The full speech copy, along with the other documents that included a vote on account for the first four months of the next fiscal, was laid on the table of the house.
