Flying car is in real now

Flying cars aren't just science fiction anymore. Woburn, Mass.-based Terrafugia Inc. said on Monday that its prototype flying car has completed its first flight, bringing the company closer to its goal of selling the flying.

The vehicle - dubbed the Transition - has two seats, four wheels and wings that fold up so it can be driven like a car. Last month, it flew at 1,400 feet for eight minutes. Commercial jets fly at 35,000 feet. It's expected to cost $279,000. And it won't help if you're stuck in traffic. The car needs a runway.

Outstanding photography in extreme weather

Photographer Matteo Zanvettor looks like he's on top of the world as he composes his shots in the Italian Alps thanks to a combination of clever perspective and rare weather conditions. The 41-year-old photographer had to battle against 100kmph winds and driving snow to get landscape shots.

Matteo ended up being the subject of some of the best pictures taken by his friend Edoardo Brotto, as frozen snow whipped up around him gave the illusion he was standing on clouds in the Alps.

He said: 'I've never been on top of a mountain with such strong winds - I was worried we might have to turn back but we decided to carry on.We got to Lagazuoi, which is part of the Ampezzo Dolomites in the Italian Alps'.

Nissan unveils batmobile like race car

This is the DeltaWing, a Nissan-powered race car that will run in this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans as an experiment. Its creators aren't chasing a victory so much as a validation that their ideas could make racing better. Think of it as a Batmobile for the race track. The rocket-shaped DeltaWing looks that way because it's built less like a traditional race car and more like a land-speed racer that can also turn.

Built by a consortium of racing firms and suppliers headed by designer Ben Bowlby and endurance racing backer Don Panos, the DeltaWing was created as a possible alternative to IndyCars. When Indy racing decided to stick with a more traditional design, the DeltaWing's backers looked for other opportunities to prove their concept.

What does music look like ?

German artist Martin Klimas set out to answer the question "What does music look like?". In order to find out, he selects some music, puts splatters of different colours of paint on a translucent sheet over the diaphragm of a speaker and then turns up the volume.

The vibrations of the speaker send the paint up into the air, creating beautiful patterns and sculptural forms, and Klimas photographs the results. He typically chooses dynamic and percussive music such as Steve Reich, Miles Davis or Jimi Hendrix.

Amazing light graffiti of supercars

The images are the latest work of Marc Cameron and photographer Mark Brown. The duo are secretive about their exact methods but say they use a process of reflecting and refracting LED light to create outlines. Every detail of the vehicles is planned precisely before setting a camera on long exposure to catch the light painting. The entire process can take up to four hours.

Mrk Brown explains: “Using extended exposures I am able to step in front of the lens and paint with light using the camera as a canvas. Then I use real photographic components as a background for each of the light paintings. Nothing is digitally generated, only stitched together."

Stunning landscapes completed in months and years

Mr Wouter Van Buuren, a Dutch photographer, has spent seven years creating his stunning collection of images - with each individual portrait taking between two months and two years to complete. He scales 70m-high electricity pylons, cranes, bridges and even skyscrapers in a bid to take the vertigo-inducing snaps. He then spends months arranging the photographs to make up one huge landscape - giving the effect of looking down on the whole world.

Mr Van Buuren said: 'I started to make the "total landscapes" in the Netherlands when I was climbing in electricity pylons. I was stunned by the beauty of the landscape I thought I knew so well. When I looked at the landscape from above, the mundane seemed more divine, so I decided to look around for what else I could take images from - and started climbing cranes, bridges and buildings and other countries all over the world'.

Nature’s most spectacular sights

Photographer James Appleton from Cambridge braved the mighty flames of the Fimmvvrpuhals volcano and the frozen bite of the harsh Icelandic winter – and was rewarded with these incredibly rare shots. They capture two of nature’s most spectacular sights - the northern lights and an erupting volcano in Iceland - in a single shot.

Photographer James Appleton has spent the past seven years capturing the volatile and stunning landscapes of Iceland, and when he was told the Fimmvvrpuhals volcano was erupting, he immediately knew he had to see it.Working alongside vulcanologists, Mr Appleton, 25, got within a few hundred feet of the erupting volcano to get the perfect shot.

‘I never dared to hope it might actually happen, but seeing it for real put all the hairs on the back of my neck up.When I saw the photographs come through the camera I was jumping around with excitement.’ James Appleton said.
